Yes. 18 years ago. 12 students and 1 teacher. Lived about four blocks from the school at that time.

My 79 year old MIL still hunts deer.
Yes, but we were living in the country and I have never lived in a city. My ex who had guns hunted but I still have never heard a gun shot off. Maybe guns are more of a city thing.

But now that I think way way back, I do know someone who was a victim of gun violence. A cousin's son who was accidentally killed by his brother as they were cleaning their guns. THAT was an example of a country thing. Wasn't really violence though, just a stupid accident.

So, no I really don't have any experience of anyone being involved in gun violence living in the country or a small town. When I hear about gun violence on tv, it's in a city.

I was robbed at gun-point walking from Kroger's to my home shortly after Midnight by four teens. Since the teens bought illegally on the weapon on the street, no manner of gun-control laws would have prevented the robbery.

A man I went to college with who was nice to me went on to be a local cop. I didn't know he hadn't moved out of the area until he was gunned down by a felon who set out to kill a cop that day. His photo and name was released to the news after his family had been notified. The trial is still on going. There are four people being charged over the matter. At least two of them helped set up the ambush. He was shot in the head and the hospital tried to save him but couldn't. His killer had just been released from prison and was on parole and already had warrant out for him for parole violation. When he was up for early parole he showed no remorse for previous crimes and even joked about it and the parole board released him anyway.

He left behind a wife and young son and many other family members that loved him. His funeral was so huge that it shut down the town for hours from all the traffic.

Yes, a buddy was working late pharmacy hours, was robbed, shot and killed.

Another friend was raped and murdered, but was stabbed.

Yes.

My uncle shot his girlfriend. Luckily she survived.

A neighbor also was the victim of a drive by shooting. She was not the intended target. They shot up the wrong house.

Two notable times in my life violent crime has touched me. One involving a gun and once without. The one without firearms involved was much, much worse. I had to fire my own weapon against someone who had one themselves, the other involved someone I loved more than life, no gun involved but hyper violent nevertheless. I would have preferred it been me.

I have had to use a firearm in defense against large predator animals as well, but that doesn't really count. That was just life on a remote ranch. SOP. I suppose that in my case I wasn't a "victim" per se. The attack was not successful. Nor was the other case in the end. But the face of the enemy did show itself in no uncertain terms. Lethal force was used in self defense in both cases. And ruled justifiable.

But even when things seem cut and dry, they aren't. It's amazing how violent criminals can even attempt to claim victim status. But they can, and do.

I'm sorry. That's terrible.
