I saw that. That perhaps the vegetative state (lack of movement) combined with the long flight could have led to a blood clot.

I would put the question what actually happened to my son before any kind of religious blah. But well, that is their decisions of course.
The thing is, one cannot judge about the situation without those information. Americans are dying in other countries prisons quite some times, due to the bad situations in terms of food, safety, medical treatment - Phillippines, Indonesia, Brazil, Mexico. That's not murder.
There are people dying in our jails and the president says nothing. Police killing innocent citizens.
I definitely don't agree with the laws in North Korea but he was in their country. Don't be a stupid American in someone else's country. ESPECIALLY North Korea.
How and more importantly, why did the North Koreans select Friendship United Methodist Church to play such a role in their insanely preposterous fantasy about Otto Wormbier's motivation for visiting their benighted country?? Wormbier had no connection with this church, which has a typical moderately activist congregation in well-off Wyoming, Ohio. Methodists are certainly not extremists of any stripe. Methodism is a well-respected middle-of-the-road Protestant denomination, and this church reflects that. Wealthy congregants? Quite possibly; Wyoming is a well-to-do Cincinnati suburb noted for its large, well-maintained Victorian houses, trees, and pleasant quality of life.
Did the NKs just look for a church in Wyoming, Otto's neighborhood? And why did they paint his family as impoverished? Clearly, they were no such thing. Did Otto claim poverty to try to gain sympathy from the NKs? The whole thing is utterly unbelievable, of course - but why spin such a thin yarn in the first place? Who did the NKs think this tale would convince or persuade? Did Otto himself contribute part of this narrative? Or did he just provide his name and address, and the NKs came up with the rest?
As far as I can tell, the church has not issued a statement. I would think it would be in their best interests to do so asap, as I expect calls from the media are overwhelming at present. Or maybe not, since the NK version of what occurred is so patently ridiculous.
I believe the United Methodist Church was specifically targeted because it has a very strong presence in South Korea - millions of practicing Methodists there and many missionaries. It is possibly the largest Christian church presence in that area of the world. There are also many Korean American Methodists (e.g. a recent bishop of Chicago United Methodists was Korean American).
North Korea needed to send a message to their citizenry who may have been exposed to the Methodist/Christian ideology and are talking to others (e.g. from NK escapees who had been aided by SK Methodist missionaries, but then captured by the Chinese and promptly returned to NK). They simply picked the largest Methodist Church near Otto's hometown to blame. Wonder how many NK prisoners are Methodists from South Korea, US, Europe, which the NK took as a threat to their regime?
I hope it does force action. China, really DPRK's only ally, would not want to be seen on the side of this kind of bad behavior. It may be the best shot to take them down.
The family is Jewish. We don't autopsy except in very unusual circumstances.
But this is pretty unusual, isn't it? I should think they might want to know if he died by the hand of God or the hand of man.
