all this ignoring the fact that there are several programs already in place to deal with people like this, but they refuse to enter those programs.

freedom is a pesky thing isnt it?
She told him she needed help. Where did you get that she refused help?

Also- where do you live that there are plenty of programs for the mentally ill or addicted? Because there sure as hell isnt where I live. The state has been trying to figure out what they are going to do because it's a crisis.

She was white, her hands were so filthy I could not see her skin color. Her neck was filthy too.
I've never seen anyone as bad off as she appeared to be. I asked her what she was doing there and told her she needed to get some help. She was tweaking and couldn't give me a clear answer. She mumbled any replies. After a few seconds she wandered down the sidewalk sat down in front of a tree and started talking to herself.

WTF?

We aren't doing these people any favors allowing them to destroy themselves. That individual would be a beautiful young woman in any society that was in any way capable of taking care of its people and gave a damn at all. I don't think any decent society would allow this.

She sees dead people.

There's plenty of help available out there, one just has to ask for help.

You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make the horse drink.

Put another way, how many psychologists does it take to change a light bulb? It only takes one, but the light bulb has to want to change.
More people get and stay clean in the AA/NA rooms and Salvation Army than anywhere else in the US. Donations are welcome but not required.

Rehabs tend to be revolving doors of people coherenced/ court- ordered to be there.

It seems so. It seems to me like modern society, at least in liberal places like Seattle, enable irresponsible behavior. A junkie talking to themselves on the street? A drunk passed out in the park? A panhandler aggressively bugging people for money? Too many people will say "We can't judge them. They're victims of addiction. They just have a condition so its not really their fault. Lets not put any stigma on that. The government will solve it." Its not a constructive attitude to solving the problem.

They arrest them sometimes, but it costs money to house them in jail, so what's your solution?

He fixes equipment. Not people.

I'm the same way. Hate people. Can't fix them. People come with excuses.

Engines don't. Scan tool to get to the root of the problem and start tearing down and grab the torque wrench follow the timing proceedure and it's back and running good as new in a day if parts are in stock...

Well, some, yes. I had in mind a particular person when I said this. My friend's niece has really wild HIGH HIGH manias with her bipolar. People think she is a meth user but she does not use drugs, even while manic. It's the maina being so high she acts the same way as a meth user. She ends up homeless and filthy like the woman described in the OP. She is so beautiful underneath all that, was another specific in the OP that made me think of her.

She can't go home because she thinks her family is out to get her and her money doesn't last out there. People steal it. She blows it on stupid things because she is not in her right mind and can't budget. It's really sad and w/o family to rescue her I guess she'd end up out there forever.

Eventually she attracts the attention of police who make up lies to commit her and I guess that is good. She IS a danger to herself, but not the legal definition. So they make one up because it's SO clear she MUST go to a hospital. The laws need to change a bit.

If someone is outside getting raped and robbed and beaten due to their illness they ARE a danger to themselves. Now she has PTSD up the wahoo from being raped and robbed and beaten. There are men who troll for homeless women, offer them shelter or shower or food and then demand sex. Or take it by force. People want her to write a book but she said the memories are too painful.

Also, she is smart. She gets judges to let her go all the time. Family involvement is crucial. Her mother or Aunt calls the facility and tells them she is VERY SMART at her hearings, here is ammunition to keep her in. It's very difficult, these laws. We don't want bad people causing others to get committed but the system imo is a bit too heavy on patient rights, and that is hard to type, because we desperately need our liberties protected. But when people are clearly too ill to care for themselves the laws become a real hassle.

Great answer.

Stick with what you know.

If your dipstick is OK you won't need another one.
