And? Did someone argue it would be tomorrow? Is that how your thinking works?

Sure. We subsidize them also.

This is a pension issue and will apply to any industry/company that goes bankrupt with unfunded pensions. Don't try and single coal out for your concerns. .
We are discussing subsidies and how coal is also subsidized

As far as we know, we won't have the technology to eliminate nighttime any time soon.

There is a variety of ways for delivery depending on where you live. Bagged product is available throughout the northeast. Hi lift service would be available in Northeast Pa and some other areas. BTU for BTU I used to be able deliver faster than oil.

When loaded that's about 20K pounds up in the air.

I do not see it in your pictures. I could post a picture of a gas fired fireplace, clean easy. No storage issue for the fuel, hands free from the product.
A coal stove is not that much of inconvenience to operate. A automated stoker coal boiler is no different than any conventional boiler except you need to put coal in one end and take ashes out of the other. During the coldest weather you may have to attend to it once a day for 5 minutes. During milder wethere it's 5 minutes every few days.

The hand fired stoves would need to be attended to twice a day but they have the advantage of not requiring any electric to operate.

Your primary user of anthracite is going to be in rural or semi rural area with no gas available. As far as storage goes it's going to be slightly more than oil. About 1/3 the space of wood or wood pellets. It can be stored anywhere, even outside on the ground. No concerns about bugs or it going bad.

I do not see a large number of people poring out to switch back, nor will we.
It's an up and down industry, in 2008 they had a 1 year waiting list for some boilers. I have no illusions about coal ever becoming a major source for domestic home heating but if you are in the situation where you are considering wood or wood pellets and live in the Northeast it's something to look at. The only advantage wood is going to have over coal in most places is less ashes. For safety, convenience and in most places cost coal is going to blow wood and wood pellets away.

There is nicer ones than that, that one pictured is new. There is fairly large market for functioning antique stoves that can be very expensive.

If you look in the Kitchen section of this site you can find coal/wood/gas combos and some of them even have hot water jackets. The gas was used for summer time and then they would switch to coal/wood in the winter.

Coal does get subsidies. Heck, Mylan (the pharmaceutical company) used massive coal subsidies to achieve a -294% tax rate last year.

Coal is dying as an energy source and it's not coming back. It can't even stay on top when receiving massive subsidies.

The primary subsidy or tax break for coal is for pollution controls, compared to the market the amount is trivial.

Yes but you are mixing something into the discussion that is an issue for both public and private pensions.

"By 2040, U.S. power generation from renewable energy is likely to skyrocket by 169%, according to a recent forecast from the research firm Bloomberg New Energy Finance. Coal-fired power is projected to plunge by 51% in the United States over the same period.

That is complete lunacy.

Not only is solar much, much more expensive than coal, it's also as unreliable and fickle as the weather.

Many places in the world only average 4-5 hours a day of usable sunlight, for solar energy.

Why? WHAT are the long term advantages of coal vs. solar?
