The coal industry employs about 76,000 people. More people work in retail, which is bleeding jobs. Where's the out cry for an industry that employs 4.8 million people?

Before people say coal is special, the same dynamic applies, both are dying industries, but retail employees people all over the country, in rural and and urban areas, as opposed to coal, which only employs people in certain areas of the country. Heck move people work at car washes (150,000) or museums (90,000) than in coal mines.

Incorrect. Coal is not a dying industry.

Retail is irrelevant to that discussion.

Obama used the EPA to close coal burning plants and the end result was an increase of electricity rates across the USA and a decline in coal usage. This trend will stop now that Trump has ended the EPA over reach.

Rhodium Group » Coal Quarterly: Profits Rise but Employment Falls

COAL EMPLOYMENT CONTINUES TO DECLINE

While Q1 was relatively positive for US coal companies, it wasn’t good enough for them to resume hiring. According to the MSHA data released last Friday, total coal mining employment (including contractors) was down 7% year-on-year, and 2% quarter-on-quarter (Figure 3 and Table 2). US mining employment now stands at 73,152, 45% lower than it was just five years ago. There was a small quarter-on-quarter increase in full time mining employment during Q1 (1%), but a 4% decrease from the same period in 2016. And contract employment fell by 8% QoQ and 16% YoY, pulling down the total numbers.

Is this winning? MAGA?

A glut of cheap natural gas from fracking caused utilities to switch some of their generation from coal to gas. There are regulations on emissions from both coal and gas plants; it's easier to meet emissions regulations with cleaner burning natural gas.

Simple economics. Not an Evil Obama Conspiracy.

No wonder Warren Buffet and George Soros bought up coal companies( after driving them under by pushing global warming) on the cheap and now are reaping the financial rewards.
But what I don't get that if its a given that fossil fuels are yesterdays energy source, then why aren't wind and solar also being abandoned? Fusion and super high tech energy are either here or being held back until the maximum profitability of them can be realized. That's the future.

Ok, let's say it is true. Does that mean because coal is hiring less than Tesla, it has to be killed altogether? Can Tesla hire ALL the coal miners tomorrow? If they can, I'll go with shutting down coal mines. Problem is the compassionate left who worries about single mothers and starving kids all the time don't give a damn about coal miners and their families. You have NO plans for them other than $400 welfare checks and a life in drugs.

A lot of companies have more employees than the entire coal industry including their administrative staff.

The entire coal industry employs fewer people than Arby’s

It's bizarre how much attention unemployed coal workers demand when coal employment has been declining for decades.

If humans are still using fossil fuels several hundred years from now, it will be on the brink of their own extinction. And it wouldn't take even that long. We have the capacity to move past this now, but we won't because people are dumb and stubborn and afraid of change.

Show me all the ghost towns that were created because Wendy's closed shop. Entire states lay in ruins. What's your plan for them?
