It's more than $0.1 trillion/year. That's only the government's investment. Private industry invests much more. Hence, the higher prices.

From the link I posted:

Quote:
"The average cost of developing a new drug ranges from $800 million to $1.2 billion and takes an average of 10 to 15 years from initial discovery to being delivered to the patient, according to the Indiana-based drug company Eli Lilly. In 2014, the company had more than $19.6 billion in revenue, of which $4.73 billion, or 24 percent, went to R&D, according to its 2014 annual report."

We need single payer WITH copays and deductibles. Think of it as bankruptcy insurance roughly equal to a silver plan.

Salaries quoted previous look to either be old or in error. I found this: https://www.worldsalaries.org/professionalnurse.shtml

Crazy, I should say.

Those who benefit more from living and doing business in our nation should pay more.

The average family benefits from about a dozen people learning to read and write in public schools. The Waltons (Walmart owners) benefit from a couple million learning to read and write.

The average family takes maybe one cross-country trip a year on the interstate highway system. Compare that to the number of Walmart trucks eating up the interstates.

Why anyone would want to live in the Ayn Rand, dog-eat-dog world is beyond me. Even Ayn Rand needed help in the end.

Interesting read:

Single-payer healthcare is popular with Californians
It could work if healthcare wasn't for-profit.

Yes, it's crazy.

It could only happen here in Puritain America, where hard work and suffering are believed to be the paths to eternal salvation.

"Don't worry about your miserable life in the here and now, work hard and you'll get pie in the sky when you die."

From a public policy perspective, single payer is a no brainer with the price controls that it inevitably brings.

It opens up jobs. Think of how many people work solely to keep their health insurance before medicare kicks in?

Think of how many people might open their own businesses without having to worry about health insurance for their families?

Bottom line is, it is right wing ideology that is stopping the US from going in the direction with this public policy that it should.

Anti government, anti tax ideology. Period. So, find whatever "facts" you can to try to convince people it would cost more.

All in, "net net", it would cost less. Significantly less. Honest educated people know this.

Dishonest people (idealogues) or institutions with something to lose (Insurers, big Pharma) will continue to spread disinformation to keep the current sad system in place.

U.S. federal income tax brackets range from 10% to 35% for individuals. On the Canadian side, the range is 15% to 29%. In the U.S., the lowest tax bracket bumps to 15% at $8,500 and to 25% at $34,501. The bottom Canadian bracket stays at 15% until $41,544. Do Canadians Really Pay More Taxes Than Americans?
To be fair the canadians also have GST and HST which is a sales tax on most everything including services
