UN charter of basic human rights(here it is):
Article 24.
  • Everyone has the right to rest and leisure, including reasonable limitation of working hours and periodic holidays with pay.
Article 25.
  • (1) Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control.
    (2) Motherhood and childhood are entitled to special care and assistance. All children, whether born in or out of wedlock, shall enjoy the same social protection.
Read POINT (1) especially-> ... in circumstances BEYOND his control.
Thus the 40 hour work week.
No problem helping those willing to help themselves. Joe drug addict, criminal or overall screw up is on his own.
Moms deserve help regardless of status. If for no other reason the child is innocent. That said women who can't seem to grasp the concept of birth control and behave like baby factories deserve what ever stigma they receive.
The UN Charter is a useless charter written by a useless org. I did a few UN missions and know first hand how fubar the UN really is.

For many, 40 hour workweek is a dream(for me, this was part time)... there are no laws in US which would limit workweek across the whole labor body.

FMLA was altered in many ways, so as to enable exploitation of workers. You're right, 40hrs workweek WAS the original intention.

I agree about moms.

I average 60 hours and I am fine with that. Most I work with are fine with it also. The ones who aren't have the right to find a job that is 40 hr weeks.
FMLA: a noble idea that is most definetly abused. Not just by the employers either. More often by the ever present scam artists. As is workmans comp and disability.
Its amazing how back injuries are the number 1 injury during the snow months where I work. By this I mean they tend to get turned in as work related. Usually by the laziest slackers on the floor.

Exactly... Its so easy to count what ifs rather than simply excercising a bit of self control.
LOL My challenge is that I really would like to buy a Kabota 4 wheel drive garden tractor. Don't really need all wheel drive or a diesel but damn I want one. LOL So I am saving up for it...

I'm with Tinman on the Kubota. LOL. Have a 1/3 of an acre but man it would be nice to have.

If one is conservative with their finances, takes advantage of educational programs afforded to them, and exhibits some self-control a 40 hour work week job is more than adequate.

My concern lies with corrupt business behavior, government over-spending, and government interventions such as the proposed sub-prime bailout plan that negatively affects the lives of those who do make prudent decisions with their finances and restrain themselves from impulsive purchases.

As a middle-school math teacher, it is frustrating to see the number of children who refuse to participate in their education and are indifferent to the reality of having to repeat the same grade again and again until their parent "signs them out" at age 16.

The majority of these kids were brought up in poverty, raised by a single parent, and were being supported by the welfare system. Many of these children see no urgency for education because their parent didn't have one and someone is taking care of them.
