Why is Ivanka doing this? Do we still have a Secretary of State? If a President cannot be at a World event, shouldn't it be his job to take a President's place? A President's Daughter instead? Strange. This is starting to remind me of Edith Wilson and Nancy Reagan, but at least they were First Ladies. You can read between the lines of what I am saying.
Only an absolute imbecile or cultist would approve of a POTUS sending an unelected, unconfirmed and unqualified relative to meet with G-20 leaders. As someone said earlier, that's what third-world dictators do.
It's six of one or half a dozen of the other. She's no less qualified to meet with the G-20 leaders than Trump.
It's not customary to fill those spots with relatives, though. Strange how this keeps getting left out.
Here's the easy way at to think about this.
Is it unusual to have a seat filler? No, absolutely not.
Would it be unusual to have a 35 year old political appointeee with no significant prior government experience sitting at this meeting, rather than a more seasoned appointee? Yes, absolutely.
Would it be unusual to have a mid-grade professional diplomat sitting at this meeting, rather than a more senior diplomat? Yes, absolutely.
She was there because she was his daughter-no other reason. Not education, not experience, not position. Her daddy is the President, and that's the only reason. That's the very definition of nepotism. Nepotism, even if legal, is completely unethical in government service.
She has no damn business there period, let alone opening her mouth to say anything!
Why does she "have no damn business there?" That is purely your opinion, and it isn't based on any logic or tradition. She is part of the staff. Staff often sit in the President's chair if he must step out (which is the case here) and it was only for a short while. Other countries follow the same protocol.
Geeze, it's not like Trump wasn't present at all.
