But the state's $6 billion Reef tourism industry has slammed the latest campaign as “distorting the truth” by “cherrypicking” the worst-affected shallow reef sites to portray a global mass coral bleaching event
Quote:
The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority has warned against “ridiculously exaggerated” and “irresponsible” reports of the death of the Reef over an area “bigger than Italy”.

“Time and again, the Reef has shown itself to be a resilient system,” a spokeswoman said yesterday. “Not all bleached coral will die.’’
Quote:
Dive operators will this week launch their own independent survey with accredited marine biologists at sites off Cairns and Port Douglas north to Lizard Island.

Col McKenzie, of the Association of Marine Park Tourism Operators, said one cyclone could put an end to the whole bleaching event.

“These king tides which expose the coral, half a metre out of the water, to direct heat and sunlight are part of the natural cycle of the Earth.

“But to go to two shallow reef sites and show stark white staghorn coral, which is under stress but still alive, and say ‘look the whole Reef is dead’ is grossly distorting the truth.’

Great Barrier Reef dead at 25 million | New York Post

The Koch brothers, their Republican puppets, Trump and his Trumpies all can take a bow.

Is it any wonder that most of the rest of the world now looks at the U.S. environmental policies with dismay, if not total disgust?

Global food security is at great risk if man-made climate change is not mitigated in the near future.

The world’s population is expected to grow to almost 10 billion by 2050, an increase of around 30 per cent.
Almost half the world’s population relies on food from the ocean as the primary source of protein, and with this anticipated population growth seafood will continue to be in high demand.
For many decades scientists have studied the changing climate and now have clear evidence of impacts on the ocean.>>

One example of what worries marine scientists:

<<Rising sea levels will cover wetlands and other low lying habitats where fish reproduce, and destroy mangroves, the nurseries for many commercially important fish species.>>

Gee thanks Australia...you killed the reef.

I owe you a rep for this post. Excellent assessment of the knee-jerk rightwing reaction to the idea that billions of humans could be adversely affecting the planet (which seems like a no brainer on its face), born and nurtured by entities who stand to lose if the truth is accepted. Mindless idiots who will usher us into the earth's demise because they lack the ability to think for themselves. This is the mindset that brought the planet President Trump, and it is the mindset that will eventually doom us as a species.

Death of Great Barrier Reef is like Peak Oil, Flat Earth, Global Warming, and Ice Free Antarctica.... End of the Worlders still present in this era... what next? Great Barrier Reef resurrection next year? You Global Warming fanatics love to convert people to your faith...

Only republicans use fossil fuels. Only republicans drive cars. Only republicans heat and cool their homes.

Thanks republicans for killing the reef.

We can invest in better technologies in power, transportation and even waste disposal, for example.

Whenever I hear the word "invest" it usually means more Tax Money....from Americans.....on sh*t that doesn't work or at best has minimal ROI.

We can have sensible regulations on pollution.

Whenever I hear the word "Regulations", it usually means the stuff that I need to exist... will cost more money.

We can actively choose to have fewer kids.

As a society we already are having fewer kids (at least Americans are). It WOULD be nice if all muslims in the world....and the citizens of 3rd world countries in the world would choose to have less than 2 kids per household. Now THAT would have a significant positive impact on 3 different levels.

We can invest in education.

See above on the use of the word "invest". & Dude, we already are, we're OVERSPENDING on non-practical education. Obama took the national debt from 9 Trillion to 19 Trillion....much of it on "Investments".....and we have NOTHING to show for it.

Why is it that the only choices you see are the status quo or nothing? Do your political biases blind you that much that you really don't think we can't do anything?

And seriously, you're talking about refrigerators and cars while the subject is the actual dying of the planet. Priorities, Jesus.
No the "Subject" was a Barrier Reef off the NE coast of Australia. Which if I remember from my 9th grade Biology class is a natural thing.....reefs (& people) "die"....& then become "islands" (& worm food). 400 or 4000 years from now it will be called a "Great Barrier Island". It'll become a Turista bonanza & will probably resemble a large scale Miami Beach, Jersey Shore & Dubai all rolled into one.

NO MORE LIBERAL INVESTMENTS. You guys are clueless and and have failed on every single investment.....every single time. Enough is enough. The Libs remind me of my wife wanting to take my money and "invest" it at Macy's.

The death of the Great Barrier Reef is a symptom of an unhealthy planet. Take your blinders off and look at it from a larger perspective, if you are capable.

Pick your poison! Here a source you would likely believe:

"<<Rising sea levels will cover wetlands"

Didn't the same group of people predict that Miami and Virginia beach would be under water 5 or 10 years ago?

"The Koch brothers" yet not a word about Tom Steyer or George Soros.

I wonder why?
