A state cannot "go bankrupt".

With all the problems Arizona has, I'm surprised it was not in the bottom 10...

I think we should be more concerned about the well-being of actual people. Looking at it that way, nine out of the ten worst states are red states:

There is less 2 points separating texas which is in the top 10 from Mississippi and Rhode island which are in the bottom 10?

It is like people talking about obesity rates and comparing the states, the states with lowest obesity rates have hideous rates in the 22-25% range.

Can you imagine those 20-25% rates in japan , Singapore, south korea, probably Scandinavia as well, many east asian nations are usually in the low single digits.

Again and again it has to be said, you cannot use a simple comparison of where federal money is going without breaking down where that money is going. NM always top these lists, Sandia and Los Alamos by themselves add about $2600 in per capita federal spending in that state. While that funding will help with local economies the primary beneficiary of that funding is the entire nation.

You can post links all day you if you want but at the end of the day the analysis for something like this is extremely complex. Once you get beyond federal spending on things like the military, roads, and other things that can be attributed to benefits for the entire nation the next big issue that arises is just because tax dollars were collected in a state does not necessarily mean it was generated in that state.

You can go on and on about problems with trying to make this comparison.

Its actually very hard to find actual stats on the budget or much of a breakdown at all, in fact tax foundation differs from other studies Federal Spending in California

Finding budget info is not easy and non of these articles really present much of a breakdown at all, wall street 24/7 , business insider. wallet hub are pretty light weight blogs it seems

on the books has a budget app that I like and its a decent site but almost every budget web site is very hard to navigate and find real numbers

usa spending.gov is ok

I am just tired of hearing this crap from people, not you but other posters, that certain states are mooching from people who never served in the miltary or sacrificed anything, I pay taxes in two states that would probably be in the g20 by themselves and send an enormous amount of tax revenue and provides alot of the military as well, I dont think miltary service or pension pay we get is mooching no more than social security recipients receiving money that people paid into .
Military service is not spread among the regions equally at all

Almost 44 percent of all military recruits come from the South

If you want my opinion, I don't think there is much good from this kind of discussion. We shouldn't really be worrying about who is "leeching" or "contributing" more. We're all Americans, it doesn't matter to me, personally. And even if I as a resident of CA contribute more than someone in MS, I'm fine with it.

I think the reason it comes up often, though, is because each side attacks the other (e.g. conservatives claiming that all democratic states are economic disasters, and liberals claiming that all republican states are leeches).

You're not wrong. Which is why each analysis differs in its findings.
