...and nobody seems to care.

There is still time to stop and reverse it, but it likely won't happen because people in this country don't care enough and there is too much money in the illegal poaching industry for third world countries in Africa and Asia to crack down on it (nor do they have the resources to do so if they wanted to). Sad.

Guilty Americans! Asia losing the most mammals yet, "people in this country don't care". What do you suggest?

Sadly, I think there is even less chance of us working together on this issue than working together on the causes of climate change that we humans have some control over. It would take serious talk about reducing the population, limiting consumption, setting aside more land for non-humans... I fear we are too selfish and short-sighted to hold out much hope.

Will it take the End-of-world-believers with it? Since you are still here, I guess not...

The Holocene extinction event has actually been going on for a few thousand years now. In that time we have been maintaining an extinction rate greater than the rate after the chixlclub(sp?) impact. It is easy to lose perspective on just how vast the geologic timescales are even for relatively rapid catastrophic events.

When it comes down to it, this is a global issue. Ideally, we'd all be working together for the fate of the other creatures on our planet, not pointing fingers. But even if we don't have the stomach for working globally, either because we fear some sort of New World Order or just don't think we'll get agreement amongst different governments, we could be focusing on our own native wildlife at home. The federal list for just the US is not short: https://www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-id....17.b&rgn=div6.

What does fault have to do with it? We have the capacity, particularly in conjunction with others, to affect change. Yet there is no will to do so because, among other things, we are too busy whining NOT MY FAULT, HE DID IT FIRST like a 3 year old.

fault has everything to do with it.

if the Chinese are wiping out all the tigers and black rhinos to make their silly useless stiffy pills, what can any of us do about that?
how will you 'effect change' in that instance?

Diplomacy. One of the reasons isolationism is such a bad idea.
