I'll be curious to see if any country tries to harvest this thing. Instead of sitting around moaning about the fate of the world, some smart enterprising country should be looking to grab parts of this.
The ice shelf is free floating over salt seas, but is connected to the land where it rises into a mountain range.
What is different about this huge block is that the changing sea level has put stress on the ice shelf. Constant flexing has caused the crack where it would have been bending. Once in the open sea it should begin to shatter.
Some people would craft their responses to say that an expanding ice shelf always calves off bergs, but this ice shelf is not expanding fast enough to make up for the losses we are seeing, it is not stable. The ice caps are declining at both poles and this is basically a very large retreating glacier.
So the federal regs and Paris accord couldn't stop an iceberg from breaking away???
Maybe it was the 'deniers' with whom the gods were displeased that caused the ice to break away? you got to believe......or else!
the fraud is the government, federal and global, redistributing wealth and telling us it is in an effort to save the earth from sure destruction when there is no science that can demonstrate any actions by man can reverse climate change, except in projected academic theory missing a timeframe and cost. Where is the linear graph showing money spent and the mitigation of earth's destruction ?
Applying the great slippery slope theory to climate change and linking it to a political narrative, the science manipulators are confident in what used to be a dermatologists lament, 'no one dies and no one ever gets better'. In other words the effort to gather cash for redistribution in the name of HBGW will be a self perpetuating infinite souce of cash for the elite to make money and buy influence in a cosmic money laundering scheme.
Rest assured ALgore and other elitist profiteers will be the last human on earth.
It could be a couple of things. The most likely cause was the active volcano underneath it which caused the melting and caused it to break off. That's what the scientists think anyway. Or possibly it was the increased ice from the colder than normal winters that pushed it loose. That's less likely, but possible. Then there's global warming, the least likely possibility of the three.
I know the north pole is going through a colder than average summer and the ice melt there is not happening. I wonder if that will mean a colder than normal winter for the USA or if weather patterns will change and a cold summer will be followed by a mild winter at the pole.
This "iceberg" is the size of the country of Luxembourg. It is just another sign of the global calamity approaching us like a freight train called global warming. Too many global warming denialists cannot comprehend, or do not wish to comprehend, the scale of the disaster that faces future generations.
Unfortunately, this "iceberg" and other related news regarding raising temperatures, acidic oceans, etc. is the new normal.
I am sorry future generations but the position of deniers and obstructionists in this time and place is to give you all the big middle finger. They are the ones in power today.
Why don't you read this very informative article and tell us all why seal levels were +9 meters to as much as 24 meters higher during MIS 11 (the Inter-Glacial Period before the last Inter-Glacial Period 126,000 years ago)?
The most conservative estimates of palaeo-sea level during MIS 11 would require an ice mass loss equivalent to all of the modern Greenland and West Antarctic ice sheets; the more extreme estimates would require additional ice mass loss from the East Antarctic ice sheet
Now do you finally understand what happens during an Inter-Glacial Period?
Glaciers and ice sheets melt....and sea levels rise....get it? It's not rocket science, but it is peer-reviewed research.
So who are the real deniers?

Why don't they steer that baby on into Long Beach, fill rail containers with it, and empty them into some reservoirs out there?
