One utility had even started construction on their part of it.

Then, it suddenly disappeared, with no explanation. It just didn't exist anymore. The two utilities weren't talking about it and would deflect any inquiries. Obviously, the commercial interests had applied their "influence" to those working on the project. The profit-making cable providers have been jacking-up their rates, ever since. There's no alternative, if you want to upload or download HD video and now, UHD video. The wireless and telephone-line services are way too slow and not very dependable in their bit-flow levels.
That's what they do all over the country. They've gotten some states to pass laws saying municipalities cannot have their own service. They fight the likes of google fiber and other true internet providers tooth and nail.

Had those actually gone through and you had fiber back then that'd probably be amazing for your local economy. Would've attracted other businesses for sure. Instead, without a doubt, you're stuck with garbage over priced service.

I am all for doing away with Net Neutrality on one condition.
Tax Payers built the infrastructure for the INTERNET so they should own it.

The means any small business can start their own ISP and use the same lines which would create more competition.

I am pro small business and pro competition.
If the Big ISPs get to own the infrastructure, then it is does away with competition because no start up is going to be able to afford the billions in costs to lay down fiber.

It allows the too big to fail to get bigger.

How come there are not more competing companies in the military sector like Lockheed Martin?
Prices should be dropping for military hardware, but that is not the case but rather the opposite when they own the market and the politicians and can charge tax payers whatever they want.

What government law made that change.
Government laws are created to protect the wealth, making it harder for the little guy to compete and the wealthy no problems paying off the greased palms.

You enjoy government regulating the internet? Government regulations, never add substantial cost? Cost the big guy can afford.
Tax Payers built the internet.
Let any small ISP startup use the fiber optic in place and you will see a lot of competition.
If the start up has to lay their own fiber optic, it will never happen.

If the small startup has to pay Comcast to use their line, then that is not competing with Comcast but renting from them making Comcast Bigger.

For the last 40 years, the trend has been for the Too Big to Fail to get even bigger.
All mom and pops are gone swallowed up by the like of Big Walmart.
Most family farms are gone swallowed up by Big Corp Ag
Most small banks are gone swallowed up by the Big Wall Street Banks.

Once they own everything, they can charge whatever they want.

They claim to be super-patriots but they would destroy every liberty guaranteed by the Constitution. They demand free enterprise but are the spokesmen for monopoly and vested interest. Their final objective toward which all their deceit is directed is to capture political power so that using the power of the state and the power of the market simultaneously they may keep the common man in eternal subjection." Exactly, this is a win for the Too Big to Fail and a FU to small business and consumers.

Always follow the money and you will see Comcast, Verizon and so on are the top donors and lobbyists to politicians.

You need to look at who is behind the regulations or doing away with them.
A lot of regulations are written by the Big Corps themselves and passed onto their puppet politicians.

In this instance, the Big Corps want these regulations gone.
Always follow the money.

Monthly cost of internet will only go down, computer technology progresses and gets faster about every 6 months, obviously over time, cost will go down, and at some point, there will be no such thing as a slow connection.
As long as it isn't government run.The call should always go to the free market.

Sweet, that means I can hitch up my new ISP startup to the tax payers paid infrastructure and undercut the big boys. That fiber optic is the free market and is free paid by tax payers.

lol agreed. Which is why I said what I said. The larger companies survive. They've done it in health care too. A certificate of need has to be provided. As if one has to show need that a hospital needs to be built.

How come there are not hundreds of companies like Lockheed Martin and Boeing competing for government contracts on making planes.

Where is the Free Market rush by other business?
