Just speculation by a pundit at this point, but could be....

Then consider this line from Nuzzi (emphasis mine): "Scarborough and Brzezinski said the White House is misrepresenting their motivations, though they didn't rule out that Scarborough might be interested in running for president in the future."
Let's game this out a bit. Say you are a high-profile TV personality with an interest and an ambition to run for president. Positioning yourself as a solutions-minded centrist who has abandoned the party of your youth because it left you with its extreme agenda is a good place to be in an electorate that loathes both political parties and is desperate for other options.
Of course, Morning Joe was a big factor in getting Trump elected in the first place, with all the air time they gave him and letting him literally dial it in, rather than appearing in person like every other candidate was expected to. So maybe it's a guilty conscience at work and a desire to set right a mistake he was complicit in.
Scarborough is no longer a Republican, so third party? Gary Johnson said he didn't plan to run again, so maybe along with marrying Mika, Joe may be eyeing a marriage to the Libertarian party....

He might pull a Newt Gingrich and use a political campaign to sell a book.

Hmmm. Good question.
I'm with you though - Morning Joe certainly helped get Trump elected and then somewhere along the line, fell off the Trump train. Not sure if they felt guilty (maybe) or if they were losing viewers to bring about the current change.
I think possibly they had hoped that Trump would actually 'pivot' to being 'presidential' as he promised, but that never happened.

Joe might be better off starting his own polygamy party with a focus on identity politics. He could better mix his own identity by marrying within that party. Perhaps he could start with a proposal to a transgender of color and move on to unite his party with a socialist or communist rejected by democrats. If one can be found. That would get him the attention he seeks even if he doesn't run for office. It would help the ratings on his show and he could become more popular than Jerry Springer.

Big factor? Not even close.
Forgetting the fact the vast majority of Trump supporters don't watch MSNBC, during 2016, Morning Joe only averaged about 619K viewers/day.
That is a minuscule number of people compared to the 130M that actually voted.
