There are many people that are very critical of the Police and how they respond to a 911 call/crime scene with over bearing force and military style equipment.
There is a reason for what the public would call questionable tactics and it is society it self that has been getting more violent and disrespectful towards authority.

Police know how dangerous the job can be yet they still show up to work everyday to face gangs, drug dealers, drunks, druggies, wife beaters, rapists possible terrorists, murderers and any given situation that frightens us enough to dial that 911.

In this case officer Aaron Allan who was 38, married with 2 sons answered a call about a car crash and on the scene he found a car on its roof with people inside. He went in to help and was shot 14 times.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/m/9569104...led-while.html

Officer Allan was in "medic mode not police mode" when he went to that car to help the accident victims.

There are bad cops out there but the vast majority of them are good people doing a very demanding job.

We hear many bad stories and criticism of the police force and how they sometimes deal with the public with a heavy hand but now we know why some cops are tough, they want to go home at the end of their shift.

Dude. First responders will always run to the fire instead of away from it. It's what we do.

The problem is the police rely on the public for information, and one bad cop can destroy community relations forever.

In fact a bad cop can make a person hate the police for the rest of his or her life.

Stick to the original peelian principles of policing is the best advice, in terms of any police service.

They sure were Teddy Kennedy's friend.

Ask the parents of Mary Jo and see what kind of a responce you get.

Or better yet, let's all go the way that Minneapolis mayoral-candidate Raymond Dehn would like to see law enforcement (a disarmed police force). IE: they leave their guns in their vehicles.......but they can retrieve them if the SHTF of course.

Of spend 30 minutes watching a documentary about the injuries sustained by (and the fight for life and then recovery by) a Fort Worth officer.

You don't have to disarm the US police, just make them part of the community as opposed to a force of occupation, indeed the militarisation of the police has been an issue in the US for some time now.

As for firearms better training for basic officers and more common sense might not go amiss.

If you act like a military force of occupation then don't be surprised when you are treated like one.

Why do American cops kill so many compared to European cops?

Police have protocol to follow. If you don't want them to follow it, don't call the cops. Like anywhere in life, some of them might turn a blind eye but most of them will follow the law to the letter unless they're dealing with a friend or another cop, just like any other occupation in life where networking and people skills get you special treatment.

The protocol has been stepped up in recent years due to the number of guns both legal and not out there and the crazies that are so willing to pull that trigger on anyone including cops.

We had a political climate that suggested it was Ok to challenge authority and treat the police as the problem and outright enemy. That climate is now changing but the rash of ambushes that targeted police was terrible.

The officer that was shot 14 times and lost his life while trying to help someone will weigh heavily on other officers across the country and they will now approach even the most innocent call with a bit more concern and caution for themselves.

The answer is not to disarm our Police but don't be surprised after incidents like this if they are quicker to reach for their firearms.
It is not a good situation but they want to go home in one piece at the end of the day.

I am certainly not sugesting that the US Police disarm, the gun culture in the US is very different to othe countries, as is the number of firearms when compared to some other countries.

However I do think training can be improved as well as more community style policing and less military style policing in vehicles that sometimes look like something from the battlefield.

The police need to be approachable and accountable, and trust has to be a two way thing.

For instance shooting peoples pet dogs should also be a last resort, and they need to try and de-esculate and evaluate situations in the way other police forces in other countries do, rather than just going for their guns, sadly a number of recent shootings demonstrate this clearly.

Whilst I feel very sorry for any police oficer who is killed or injured (and their families), if you have the community on your side you are a lot less likely to be killed or injured imho.
