The Mafia doesn't walk around terrorizing the average citizen like MS-13 does.
I think this is true for the most part. There main goal was to MAKE MONEY, and stay under the radar, except for a few Mob bosses that thought they were Rock Stars. The Italian Mafia was gutted in the 80's, and 90's. It is no longer the crime entity it once was. It has been replaced by the Russian, and Asian mobs, and gangs like MS-13. These gangs are much more ruthless than the Italian mob, especially with "civilians".
Oh please, that's just more Godfather romancing of a regular crime organization. The Mexican-American gangs like the MM and Nuestra Familia are very structured, with written code and a strict top-down structure (mostly from shot callers in prison). They just haven't had Marlon Brando or Al Pacino to capture the American imagination like the Italian mafia.
Exactly, both are very dangerous. MS 13 has taken over El Salvador and that's why people have been fleeing. I think Jeff Sessions going down there to El Salvador was a very good thing. No one should have to flee their countries because of people like this. Now they are in the US.
If we're talking about the Italian American mafia, they're still around, they'll never go away, but they are but a shadow of their former selves such as during the 50's-60's when they wielded a lot of power and influence in many cities and states across America.
MS-13 on the other hand, they've become a transnational organized crime group.
Their members make their neighborhoods and cities worse, unlike the Italian American mafia, with no respect for human life. However, it's not like MS-13 members start targeting random people to kill. They kill people that are affiliated with the gang and ran afoul of them, or rival gang members.
There's an Italian restaurant in NJ that I have been going to since childhood. It is well known that the owners are connected. Over the years, the neighborhood turned to crap. The neighborhood's demographics completely changed, but the restaurant remains. Now, in this neighborhood, cars are constantly being stolen, people are being mugged, etc. The only reason most people even go into this neighborhood is the restaurant.
The safest place in that whole town is the parking lot of the restaurant. People can park nice cars there with no fear of them being broken into or someone attacking them.
The Italian mafia did many evil things, but at least they had a code. They kept civilians out of it, and they protected their neighborhoods in ways the police never could. The people who lived in those neighborhoods appreciated them.
