It is possible the cover-up is bigger than the crime, but even if so, why the need for continued false statements?
We didn't see nearly the level of cover-up and outright lies regarding Benghazi or any of the other investigations Republicans spent the better part of six years in Congress while they weren't creating actual legislation, so at some point you have to say where there's smoke there's fire (at least enough for Mueller to continue to do his job without impediment).
If Trump indeed finds a way to axe Mueller, it will be the beginning of the end, even with a Republican congress.

No one questions that Russia hacked the DNC and the election offices of several states. There is unanimous bipartisan agreement on that fact, along with US and European intelligence, and private computer security experts.

No one knows what evidence Mueller has on collusion. That evidence is classified or sealed. Cops don't usually release evidence before trial. When he issues indictments that will tell us a lot.
