Finally, maybe Trump is on the right track. This is the second thing he's done in the past 24 hours that I support - the other being going after affirmative action in colleges.

More immigration begets even more immigration turning America from a nation into nothing but an economic zone for immigrants and the 1%.

I can't say that slowing down immigration is a bad thing, especially with a grossly understaffed government. We have Indian friends that have been here for nearly a decade. He is here on a work visa. His wife came to finish her MBA. They have a 5 year old child that was born here. She quit her job and lost her work visa. They have applied for another nearly two years ago. They have paid their attorney over 4k and still no work visa. They were told by two new separate attorneys that the process will take about 4 years and probably about 8k. In the mean time they qualify for some assistance from our tax payer money. She wants to work but can't, so we pay.

Ending chain migration through green cards may not be such a bad thing. We should only be taking the best and the brightest. Well that's unless you're Trump and need cheap labor, but who says life is always fair?

Giving 10 points for white collar and 5 points for blue collar isn't going to strongly impact the immigration demographic that exisits now.

It is an easier system maybe -- more clear. But ultimately right now -- any immigration application is automatically given some kind of merit rating baed on career, record, health.

so the merit system isn't going to save the immigration issue in the USA. It just changes the name of how they review criteria. LOL.
And yet: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/...port/71517072/
More than half of Immigrants are on a government subsidy.
There is nothing wrong with expecting immigrants to learn our common language.
Nothing wrong with expecting immigrants to be able to provide for themselves. They should be disqualified if they can't prove themselves to be financially secure and able to afford living here.

Default NEWS- Trump proposes limiting Legal immigration to the US

Trump pushes to sharply cut the number of legal immigrants and move U.S. to a 'merit-based' immigration system - LA Times

This may be the ONLY thing that I like about Trump so far. There are WAY TOO MANY immigrants here in this country. They compete for our housing, jobs, college slots and make it harder for native-born Americans to reach the "American Dream". Thank you Pres. Trump for putting American workers ahead FOR ONCE in your life.

I have to agree. The immigrants that are allowed to move here should be exceptionally intelligent, talented and educated. And already speak English. We have enough people already to fill jobs at McDonalds and the Motel 6. Plus automation will take most of those unskilled jobs soon anyways.

You should not be here because you got lucky and the border patrol did not catch you.

There are not that many LEGAL immigrants. It already IS merit based. It's limited mostly to professions that are needed, like medical researchers and doctors. It's very difficult to get into the US and needs to be easier. To sponsor someone, the employer has to prove to the government that there are NO Americans who could fill the job.

The other ways of getting in are by marrying an American citizen and having that citizen sponsor you or sometimes by going to college here and changing status (I don't know how that's done.) Also, there is a lottery system for some countries.

I got my husband here from the UK through a fiance visa and it was not easy. I only hope they aren't going to end marriage and fiance visas next--that is just cruel.

If it were easy to get into the US, we wouldn't have ILLEGALS coming in. They would just apply and come in the right way. Trump is going about this backwards if he is limiting immigration. That limitation is one of the problems in the first place!

Come to my neck of the woods in Houston. They are all over!! Educated immigrants take jobs from educated American people. Trump and his southern sow Sarah Huck Sanders are STILL horrible people. It is pretty bad timing to put the Affirmative Action ban move back to back with this though.
