...If they refused to accept their own initial gender?
You're conflating sex and gender. Let me straighten (HAHAHA ) you out.
Transsexuals like myself aren't refusing to accept our birth gender. My birth gender is female. My birth sex is male. My brain is female. My...parts...are male. Since there is no way to rewire the brain, the body is fixed, to match the brain.
It's neurological, not mental. More specifically, neurobiological. Though it can be easy to confuse the two. Doesn't mean you're stupid, I'd never say that about you, it just means you don't understand it. I get that, it's a complicated issue.
There was a brain study done comparing the brains of cis gender people and transgender people. I'll quote the results of the study and add the link for you so you can go read it yourself if you like.
Quote:
Transsexuals experience themselves as being of the opposite sex, despite having the biological characteristics of one sex. A crucial question resulting from a previous brain study in male-to-female transsexuals was whether the reported difference according to gender identity in the central part of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BSTc) was based on a neuronal difference in the BSTc itself or just a reflection of a difference in vasoactive intestinal polypeptide innervation from the amygdala, which was used as a marker. Therefore, we determined in 42 subjects the number of somatostatin-expressing neurons in the BSTc in relation to sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, and past or present hormonal status. Regardless of sexual orientation, men had almost twice as many somatostatin neurons as women (P < 0.006). The number of neurons in the BSTc of male-to-female transsexuals was similar to that of the females (P = 0.83). In contrast, the neuron number of a female-to-male transsexual was found to be in the male range. Hormone treatment or sex hormone level variations in adulthood did not seem to have influenced BSTc neuron numbers. The present findings of somatostatin neuronal sex differences in the BSTc and its sex reversal in the transsexual brain clearly support the paradigm that in transsexuals sexual differentiation of the brain and genitals may go into opposite directions and point to a neurobiological basis of gender identity disorder.
As far as acceptance goes, you don't have to, I would never ask that of someone. I do ask for mutual respect and understanding. Living with this, as Pedro said "sucks"; it's hellish in so many ways. What I'd ask from you is to not discriminate against me if I asked for a place to live, or for a job, or any number of things you could deny me, simply because you don't agree with the way I live my life. I, and other transfolk, are asking you not to do that. Try to understand us. If you can't, at the very least don't discriminate against us. Discrimination in employment, housing, and many other things makes a pretty rough life harder than it needs to be.
Its funny how transgenders want us to accept them for who they are, but they couldn't accept themselves for who they were. That's some awesome liberal logic right there, let me tell ya! I'm so sick of transgenders and their bow-down-to-us attitudes.
You're either male or female. End of story. Quit forcing those of us who understand science to cater to your mental disorder. We don't owe you a dang thing, just like you don't owe us anything.
I think that the majority of people who hate on transgenders have never actually met any. I used to be one of the worst homophobes around. Then I met one. It helped that she was very passable and I never would have guessed. The person was quite open to questions. We became friends after a time. Through her I met others at parties etc. They are a live and let live people. They want what everyone wants. To live their lives without being treated like freaks, singled out or denied the right to just live their lives unimpeded.

Funny how knowledge can overcome hatred, isn't it? I think the problem is that people tend to fear the unknown, and in my opinion, fear is the root cause of most hatred.
Why do people CARE about these issues? Unless you are transgender, why would it bother you in any way that other people are or, that they expect to be treated like you would treat anyone else? It seems many people are personally offended that another person is openly trans. WHY? Why is a problem for anyone? People complain it's the Trans, or the Gays, or the Muslims, or the WHOMEVER, that are "forcing others to accept them". Why should they need too? It shouldn't be an issue. If someone is trans, it does not, in any way effect me. I often wonder if people simply look for reasons to be upset with others.

Yes, it's funny how much a little life experience can teach you. I was raised in Cleveland in an EXTREMELY racist & homophobic environment. One of the greatest blessings in my life was managing a real estate company on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood where all of the residential agents were gay. The other was having the opportunity to appraise hundreds of homes in Watts & Compton in South Central L.A.. When you get to know "those people" in person, they just become regular people. I credit these two experiences with allowing me to become more accepting of ALL people as just people. It also allowed me to raise my son properly with an equal respect for every variety of person.
