And for both cats and dogs? And by which government, if any, local, state, or federal?

Oh darn... accidentally hit submit without making the poll multiple choice. :x

Required by law? No. But owners should be aware that they are fully responsible for their pets, and act accordingly.

Yes.

However, I do believe the continuing vaccinations schedules are for profit really, and should come down to individual circumstances, for example, in-door cats do not need updates as an outdoor cat would. But problem is that would place a burden on a person to exercise some self responsibility, and that seems to be lacking a bit too much.

It should be a local government issue.

Yes, we do, but reason is because of the few idiots out there who need a nanny, so it spoils it for the rest of us.

A truly responsible person does not alter their behavior because of laws, like drunk driving, assault, murder, etc. They are not going to do those things anyway. However, there are more than a few people who need laws to constrain themselves, and to punish when they break them.

Sadly, I find the rabies vaccine to be a joke. I still hear cases of pets getting the disease even though they have vaccinations against it, and they are still put down.

People don't vaccinate them for rabies?

They require proof at registration for mine.

In those cases, were their vaccinations current? They need boosters every 3 years, I believe.

Also they could have gotten distemper, which mimics many of the rabies symptoms.

Well, it would be very silly for a cat, which doesn't need a license, tag, to take them outside to walk on a leash. No way to enforce it for cats. In the past, both myself and my daughter have taken in stray kittens. How will anyone know that?

How is a cat, who never goes outside, going to catch rabies? Shelter Cats are vaccinated before adoption, but again, how will anyone know if they receive their boosters?

Hmmm, I'm going to have to give this a bit of thought.
