It may not be as exciting or sexy as STEM careers or highly educated professions in law or academia but small business ownership is a great way to build wealth.
Indeed. And it's outrageous that the government discriminates against natives and in favor of immigrants when it comes to small business loans.
I think one problem here is that if we only let "high value" immigrants in, we lose the workforce that creates a LOT of our lives. There was a story today on NPR about Wisconsin farmers losing all their help...who are all deciding to move back to Mexico. The Farm Owners said they have NEVER had a single American apply for work...never. It's not gonna happen either.
That's ridiculous. If they pay the market wage, Americans will apply. That's a tautology. The market wage is the amount that must be paid to get workers to agree to work.

What would we lose if immigrants could no longer come to America? Surprisingly, one of the most important things America would lose is the contributions made by their children.
the potentially substantial contributions of their children.
It is of little use to talk about immigrants as if they are one group. Some immigrant families, especially Asians, produce outstanding students, while many other are low achievers. Amol Punjabi and his family have nothing in common with the typical migrant walking over the border from Latin America or entering as a refugee from Somalia.
Asian immigrants are predominantly "wiping the floor with American students," because their culture tends to be superior.
Seriously...study hard, focus on STEM topics. Meanwhile, we are literally dumbing down standards not just for students, but for teachers in the name of diversity and civil rights.
Instead of doing a better job of teaching African-Americans and Hispanic students we say that basic skills tests for prospective teachers should be easier as it is racist that they aren't passing at the same levels as Asians or whites. So we get worse teachers. Then we say Algebra is too tough for certain demographics, it needs to be scrapped for "civil rights."
Our culture is accommodating poor performance by lowering bars.

Interesting that people blatantly ignore the Nigerians, Iranians and other groups mentioned in the article. It isn't just Asian groups mentioned.
White supremacists and their sympathizers don't like immigrants. For the rest of us immigration isn't a big deal... Life goes on...
Did you ever hear the expression "actions speak louder than words."? Any Brown, Non-European person in a European Country IS BY DEFINITION A WHITE SUPREMACIST. If they were not they would not be here.

The US has benefitted greatly from brain drain where intelligent people from other countries come to US, but Trump seems hell bent in putting an end to it. Why? Because that is what his loyalists want to hear.
