We keep hearing that China will not tolerate American troops near its border. America will not tolerate a nuclear North Korea threatening the world. It should be obvious that Kim has got to go from all sides.
South Korea is an economic power and a threat to no one.
Can we quickly negotiate an agreement with the Chinese eliminating Kim's dictatorship, reuniting the Koreas, and removing American troops from the peninsula?
China wants an authoritarian puppet on the the Korean peninsula, guarding its border.
Right now, China finds the autocrat Kim Jong-un far preferable to either Moon Jae-in or Park Guenhye, especially since South Korea has a history of changing its leadership through democratic means.
First, South Korea does have a significant military. Ranked 12th in the world with 1500 planes, 2600 tanks, 600,000 active soldiers, and 5,000,000 reserves.
Second, China doesn't want an economic power that is a democracy on their border. It might make China look bad by comparison. Then it might have a problem keeping their people from defecting and emigrating. Everything is relative. China looks prosperous lined up next to North Korea, not so much lined up next to South Korea. Ditto for political freedom.
GDP (PPP) per capita is often considered one of the indicators of a country's standard of living. Using IMF 2016 figures:

The North Korea numbers are CIA estimated since so little is known about them.

If North Korea attempts to attack the US or South Korea, of course it will be legitimate to destroy the government. However it has not happened yet.
There's no way to know something like that. However, there was a wikileaks diplomatic cable information indicating that senior Chinese diplomats told South Korea that China preferred a unified Korea under South Korea. Any leaked information should be understood as close to true facts.

China has excellent relations with South Korea. There are a lot of south Koreans in China or traveling in China, as tourists but much more doing commercial business transactions. South Korean companies are manufacturing big ticket items in China, much of it for export. South Korea imports food items from China, much of which they process and export to North America and other Asian countries. Those two countries are getting along very well together.
I personally think the Chinese would be ok with a unified Korea with a free market economy, if the country did not have foreign forces along the Yalu river. If the USA agreed to withdraw completely from Korea I doubt there would be a problem.

My current supervisor is from South Korea, he's been in the US since 2003 and he would emphatically disagree, he believes China doesn't want a unified Korean peninsula ever. They (China) would rather have it just the way it is now, even with a crazy dictator in North Korea.
