-I think it's cold in New York City, so Lady Liberty is wearing a big scarf.
-I'm thinking it's a high school student's artistic rendering, and high school students sometimes like to intentionally go for controversy. Keep this in perspective.
-I'm thinking it represents a group that has been hated on lots lately, and that Lady Liberty welcomes people who aren't like the majority, and gives them the opportunity to be themselves and worship as they see fit (a big part of US history was breaking away from the state Church of England).
In fact it's an iconic symbol of the American dream being open to people who are very different from one another.
-I'm thinking artistic expression is sometimes uncomfortable for some people and I'm okay with that. People have the right to dislike something or see something as in poor taste, but Lady Liberty is about protecting sometimes unpopular views.
-At the same time, I'm thinking there's no need to use an artistic representation that some may not care for to goad and purposefully offend others as this may be counterproductive to the intent of the artist.
-I'm thinking from glancing at the comments in the link the OP posted, that people automatically go for their basest instincts (fear and prejudices) and assume the worst and come up with all kinds of conjecture, assuming the worst about a statement that isn't intended at all.
-I'm thinking some of the people writing those comments need to get out of the basement a little more and find something productive to do.
-I'm thinking there will probably (unfortunately) need to be a knee jerk reaction to this, and some politician will propose an unconstitutional law banning this kind of display, piously naming the law after someone.
-I'm thinking why is there no uproar when Lady Liberty is used in crass advertisements for all kinds of products and services, but this causes such an uproar?
After the muslims hit the twin towers many muslims were passing out pictures of muslim domes all over NYC.. They thought it was funny.
Strange, I was living on the LES and working in Midtown at this time and didn't see anything like that anywhere in the city. What neighborhoods did you see this happening?
I think if it bothers his constituents, they need to vote him out of office.
Personally, I think it's stupid but I didn't vote for the guy.
My feelings exactly.
