There is a big difference between criminal law and lawyers and the civil law and suing.
Whilst some Lawyers and Law Students often do pro bono work (for free), whilst in terms of the Criminal System, legal aid is provided in many countries to ensure that everyone has the right to legal representation and everyone has the right to a Lawyer whilst be questioned under caution by the police.
Not all Lawyers are bad people, however that is not to say that all lawyers are good people or that some lawyers (mainly in terms of civil law and suing) are not extremely unethical and greedy individuals.

This thread is perfect for the zeitgeist we live in. Hatred. Everyone needs a scapegoat. In litigation there are winners and losers. Who brings these suits? Not lawyers but their clients. YOU. So who is the scum?

Depends on the situation, if the police have made an alegation, then you will be thankful for having a lawyer in relation to criminal law, as for civil litigation that's a seperate part of the law and has very different lawyers.

Lawyers who defend criminal defendants are rendering a service required under the constitution. That is atrocious to some. Live in Russia or China if you don't like it. When you are in trouble, you only wish that you these protections.

I agree, not all lawyers are bad, indeed the bad ones are mainly ambulance chasing litigation lawyers.
It's important to be represented at a police station or in a criminal court room as part of your basic rights.
In general, I try not to think of groups of people as scum.
