We were united a long time ago. This is now being used to divide us.

People like that are heros worthy of honor and respect.
They were Americans that fought against their own country. That is treason. Traitors deserve execution. Period. Once you become a traitor, everything else is meaningless, period. Traitors are not worthy of respect, ever. And the Confederate cause itself is disgraceful.

Just being American is not enough. You have to earn respect, and do not do anything to jeopardize it. Once you become a traitor, all respect is gone.

Again, no logical reason has been offered.

Only in geographic sense. America has never truly been united. If we were truly united, there would be no Civil War. There would be no Jim Crow. There would not be the divisions we have. We have never truly been united.

Me too. This is a fun read:

Texas (Boys State) government votes to secede

"Nevertheless, the declaration of independence approved by the boys says it is Texans’ right, “nay their obligation, to break the chains and throw down the regulations that bind them.â€â€œAs it stood, the United States merely served to regulate Texans and no more,†the declaration says."

It's silly and it won't work. Besides, this is not comparable to Confederate secession.

The Americans who fought and suffered as a result of the Civil war don't agree with you. Their opinions carries more weight with me than yours - 150 years after the fact. They got over it, so should you since you weren't involved. They were welcomed back as citizens and helped build this country into the world power it became.

The North and South put aside their differences. There have always been other divisions.

Unilateral government action over old cultural heroes and symbols invites further inter-group discord at some point. You're more likely to see society fracture further as a result than a meaningless voting out of those responsible for actions that more or less cannot be reversed.

In other words, your remark over-simplifies likely long term consequences in favor of a meaningless suggestion.

Exactly. I'm not sure that a city in the state that Baltimore is in should be making social statements lest in draw attention the fact that what it 'thinks' and does obviously leads to urban dystopia.
