Seriously, history is trying to repeat itself with Nazi's going up against the Communists. Hopefully this doesn't escalate to the levels seen in 30's/40's Germany. It's definitely not helping that the media is completely taking the Commie's side.

Are people sensible enough to know that they don't have to choose one extreme side or the other?

Nazism and Communism are the same thing. Both want government control over the people. The only difference is that Nazis will allow private ownership of the means of production as long as it serves the state. The Communists want the state to own the means of production.
