Go to Germany. See about finding statues of Hitler. You'll find none. Then go and ask some German citizens what happened in their country between 1930 and 1945. Ask yourself; do you anticipate that they won't know?

Removing statues that celebrate people does not lead to collective amnesia. That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. I'd believe that Earth is flat before I believe that the presence of statues is the most efficient mode of history education.
If you would go to Germany I doubt you will find many statues or memorials of Hitler or most top Nazis either. They were such a profound evil that they dwarf almost all others.

But you will find monuments and memorials to German leaders of World War 1 and earlier wars. In fact, the Germans even honor some WW2 figures. Take for instance the 3 former Lütjens-class destroyers of the German Navy.

1. D185 Lütjens - named after the captain of the WW2 German battleship Bismarck
2. D186 Mölders - named after a WW2 German fighter pilot (the Mölders served until 2003 and is now a museum ship)
3. D186 Rommel - named after a the famous WW2 German general

Rommel assisted a plot to try and assassinate Hitler and the Nazis had him removed. He seems a reasonable person to put on a pedestal.
