And Trump is absolutely defending them. He tried to lay shared-blame on the counter-protesters for peacefully gathering to reject the KKK message of hate. Everyone had a right to be there to spew their message, but only one group came armed to the hilt, and was the aggressor, and unfortunately Trump chose to defend them, and call them fine people.

Peaceful demonstrators(counter protesters) had permits for 2 parks (McGuffey and Liberty) which were 1-2 blocks away from the other rally. All 3 parks were in the downtown area and required people to park their cars and walk to the parks.
The people walking down the street that were mowed down by the alt-right killer - they were peacefully walking to the 2 parks where they had valid permits to demonstrate. They were legally allowed to be there.
Here is what the counter protesters posted to their rally attendees at the 2 parks that had permits
"We acknowledge there will be a significant number of people in the downtown area and urge all parties to engage in non-violent, civil protest and to be prepared if engaging in direct action. We ask that people coming downtown bring extra food and water to share and to bring ponchos for rain rather than umbrellas. Our goal is to lawfully and peacefully assemble for racial justice and equity."

Agreed. I doubt the news would let the part about not having permits be a non issue. They'd be on it. This coming from someone who doesn't care about permits and is a lot more concerned about peaceful demonstrations. Not that you're saying you don't care about peaceful demonstrations.
People from Charlottesville should have come out, stood together, and beaten anyone that was destroying property. You have to defend your town. You have to defend property rights.
