The one thing I have to say about the video I have seen on the TV is that everybody is pulling together. I am seeing our Whites helping save Black lives and the other way around and many Hispanics are also in the mix as well as other nationalities. Nobody is protesting that they were saved by another skin color! While Charlottesville represented the worst in our Country; Houston represents the best. I wish them the best of luck overcoming this disaster.
It's not surprising if you live around here. If you're a hardcore racist, it would be impossible to live in the Houston metro area given the demographics. Theres not really such a thing as a white neighborhood here. The media in their New York enclaves make Texas seem like the state is run by the klan, but the reality is that Houston is better integrated and less segregated than virtually any northern city.
Who cares if assistance is offered? I'm sure it was, but what can they do really? This is not like 9/11. There is high water and storms. Except for linemen fixing power lines, and emergency responders, there really is nothing to do. Those linemen come from all over the country whenever there is a big storm. My cousin's husband works for Pittsburgh PD, and he was sent down with other emergency responders.
They drive down in caravans. I saw literally hundreds of them driving south on I-95 before Hurricane Matthew. And they're frequently asked to work in very dangerous conditions. They're heroes, IMO.

Isn't Sheila Jackson Lee a US representative for Houston? Where is she? What is she doing to help her district?

Indeed she is. The best thing she can do is stay out of the damn way. It's mostly state and local officials that are useful now. Grandstanding federal pols of either party are not needed.
The thing people don't realize until these situations is that the government is of very marginal benefit. The most important first responders are the average citizens. The government does it's best, but there is only so much they can do. These type of events really reinforce how impotent government is in general.
What I am finding most disturbing is that authorities are telling people to shelter in place, which is totally understandable because the flooding is so bad, but The Weather Channel is also saying that there is up to another 20 inches expected in the next day or two. Which means the water is going to rise even further, and will threaten or overwhelm those who remain sheltering in place.
This is a terrifying scenario unfolding here. I don't see how we come out on the other end without a significant number of casualities. I hope to God I'm wrong on that.
My best thoughts to everyone trapped in the area. In times like these we are not Democrats or Republicans, we are human beings who are all in this together.
They said emergency supplies can't reach people since no one can get into the area and they're overloaded with rescue requests.
I, too, keep checking in to see if Katygirl has posted. ATG5 is okay for now, Sandra continues to check in, etc. but I'm also worrying about her.
LOL...never mind. Glad to see you posting, Katy.
We're okay. Thanks for checking! You guys are awesome.
We haven't really flooded in our neighborhood, at least not yet. Mason Creek has a few feet to go before it reaches its banks. As long as we have these long lulls between the heavy rain, I think we will be fine.
I do remember that Canada offered great support after 9-11. But what about all our other "friends?"
Your other "friends" are most likely waiting for acceptance and requests from USA to their offers of help. Canada has a standing offer of assistance to USA in times of natural disasters, but Canada, just like with all other countries offering assistance, must wait. None of them can just simply arrive and put boots on the soil without it being approved and requested by USA government. Assistance MUST be requested by your federal government or state governments, otherwise un-requested and un-authorized foreign boots on the ground assistance arriving can be considered invasion, an act of war. ALL countries have the same policies and must abide by them.
The other thing to keep in mind is that assistance can't be provided by other countries if they don't know exactly what kind of assistance is needed. When your government requests assistance of other countries they must also advise them of exactly what kind of assistance, equipment, manpower and supplies are needed. Your state and federal governments will have to have assessment reports before they can request the additional assistance needed.
Don't expect your media to report foreign offers or America's refusals of offers for another few days. They rarely report about assistance received from other countries or about which countries offers were refused or about the fact that USA must request the assistance.
Edited to add - I hate to say this but don't be surprised if there might not be as many offers of assistance forthcoming from other countries this time as there have so readily been in the past. It's unfortunate, but your current president has offended and alienated so many of your international friends in recent months that some of them may not bother to offer assistance this time.
