Probably a lot of the uninsured are not eligible for flood insurance since they are not in a Federally designated flood area. Some of the others in flood areas have no mortgage and no bank therefore to enforce expensive premiums. Also, renters probably don't have personal property insurance that would cover losses.
After spending 16 hours on the road and traveling a distance that should have taken 1.5 hours - and being stranded in a church in the middle of smalltown Texas for three days in dealing with Rita... no thanks on the evacuation unless it's a direct hit CAT 4 or 5.
It just came to my mind that there were some news about us being in that church and how we didn't get help... found an article.
I am aware vacationers on 2 outer bank islands were evacuated due to a power failure in July. It was estimated about 2000 cars full of disgruntled vacationers evacuated. Many presumably prematurely returned home. They had a destination and no problem finding gas, food, water, lodging en route.
Look at a map. When they do evacuate the Outer Banks, a lot of the traffic has to go through the Norfolk area. That's why Norfolk has such extensive evacuation plans with zones, planned evacuation routes, and gates on the highway ramps.
Correct. I hope Turner gets fired. He is indirectly responsible for 5 deaths, IMO. We had many days of knowledge that this would be the worst tropical storm/hurricane in history (it looks like it is), and he told us to stay because he was concerned about traffic
It's not just traffic, it's life crushing traffic causing millions of people to be left prone on the roads. We have five deaths, but I absolutely believe that number would have been much higher had Turner ordered an evacuation.
Armchair quarterbacking the decisions at this time is pointless as it is an extremely complex situation and no one has all the pertinent information. As time goes by the impact and reasoning behind the decisions will come to light and then it will be a better time to make value judgments on the decisions made.
As it stands it could go in almost any direction:
It could be the case that the mayor went to some board that had estimates for the problems that could be caused by an evac and saw that they outweighed the risks of not ordering it.
It could be that he was like the mayor from Jaws and thought it would all work out fine.
Please stop posting, my city in under water, I have loved ones who are in bad shape and my girlfriend and I are ready to help as soon as it's safe for us and seeing your stupid *** posts is starting to **** me off.
You have NO CLUE what you're talking about, and you're using this disaster to take shots at liberals. How pathetic.
This is as nice as I can state it, next time, it won't be.
