There's a simple solution that doesn't require price gouging. They could just make a rule that no one can buy more than x number of gallons of gas and have the pumps shut off when they reach that amount. My husband had a 50 gallon gas tank on the back of his truck and paying $10 a gallon would have been do-able with good credit. BUT it's not fair or moral for someone in a similar situation to fill up a 50 gallon tank when gas is in temporary, short supply.
they do that- in wilma was $5 gal period- with police there- and 2- there were only a few gas stations open for miles -the lines went around several blocks - and ran out- they wanted gas for generators not drive around
FYI-in most stations the pumps were all on their bellies from the wind-
There have been no reports of price gouging on medical supplies. Where are you getting your news from ?
Price gouging on medical supplies happens every single day. Why should companies charge so much on live saving medicines and supplies? Why shouldn't doctors perform their services for free instead of charging their patients?
What I meant in my post was that gasoline is not the only essential item. There are hundreds of thousands of them. If we don't allow price gouging, they would just come in at a "normal" speed and people who are waiting for those will suffer and some may die.

there is NO normal speed in devastation! - there is chaos- pain- hurt- confusion- fear -anger disappointment- loss- it's NOT A NORMAL time-
$20/gal is a bit ridiculous but you'd feel differently if you were a gas station operator, your entire business had been disrupted by the storm, and you've got idiots coming in making a run on fuel buying as much as they can. Hoarding is just as disruptive as high prices and if businesses aren't allowed to do anything to stop them besides raise their prices then it's dumb to point the finger just at the gas station operators.
