Actually they were nomads and didn't settle this country. Good people that were murdered but they didn't really contribute much to settling this country.
How were they supposed to contribute? They lived life the way their people had always lived. That's what people do. That's their contribution.

If you're going to talk about indigenous peoples, you need to include all of the Americas. The Incas, Mayans, Aztecs were just as much Native American as the Cherokee. Natives did not live exclusively in what is now the United States. Some were not stone age, had a more sophisticated calendar than Europeans, a written language and architecture the Spanish were awed at. Just saying, you can't lump American Natives into one group and say they all had the same culture and were stone age and nomads. It's not how it was. With that said, Europeans were more advanced in warfare and weaponry. Add to that a great number of Natives died from diseases brought by Europeans before there were any "wars".
I have mixed feelings about "Indigenous Peoples Day". If they want to have a holiday for that then they need to have it without taking away Columbus day. The two things should be celebrated and separately.

Europeans were a superior culture that were more technologically advanced, and replaced a Stone Age culture, and rightly so. They'd still be naked, peeing on the banks of a river if the Europeans hadn't stepped in. It is the way the world works. Grow up libs.
I beg to differ with you! The Europeans came over here to what was once a beautiful land and slowly but surely destroyed the land, waters, animals, etc. And they destroyed our way of life. Superiour! I don't think so!
To the poster that wondered what to call us. American Indians or just india n is what we call ourselves.
We were here first. Any nation that comes into another to kill and take land is a terrorist. When you came here we had open arms , even fed you. Then, you slaughtered us.
I agree, this is a disgusting thread, just as Columbus was digusting for murdering natives, all of them that were on an island, and that after they welcomed him there.

But this scenario has been played over and over again throughout the world. Romans conquered and took the territories of others deemed to be barbarians. Russians did the exact same thing when moving eastward through Siberia. It never mattered in the history of the world, anywhere in the world who was there first. The Chinese conquered and expanded as well. Look at what the Mongols did. There's no limit nor is this behavior exclusive to Europeans.
Even Native Americans and Africans had wars among themselves, expanded their territories and enslaved members of other tribes they didn't kill.
