You know...There are a pretty large number of towns (big and small) in the upper mid west that run their own power plants. Most that I am familiar with are large enough to carry town load and run in the "island" mode for some weeks. They respond in case of storms in both the summer and winter months. Not sure why you don't see this on the Coasts or down south. I guess those folks are smarter than us in the great white north.....With the extent of damage in Fla. maybe it wouldn't matter anyhow....
