This was a terrible incident. But I don't think that everyone should rush to make this a racially motivated incident. IMO it's more a case of bullying by a bunch of older loser boys. A six year difference in age is HUGE.
A group of 14 year olds were most likely bothered by an 8-year old boy trying to hang out with them. Yes, they may have called him racial slurs, but had he been white, they would have insulted him with names like "fatty" or "retard". Kids can be very cruel at that age, especially unsupervised ones. Even among siblings, the older/stronger ones will pick on the younger/weaker ones. My husband has told me stories of how his sisters would pick on him as a kid when their parents weren't around. Once they pulled his arms so severely, that he had to go to the ER.
So I have to question why an 8-year old boy was in the company of a group of 14-year olds. Why wasn't the 8-year in the company of a family member or adult friend of the family?
And I hope that the 14-year olds get punished and have to do many hours of community service.

never thought I would see a "kids will be kids" argument made to justify putting a rope around someone's neck and throwing objects at them while making racial slurs.

And let's wait a little while before we decide what the facts are in this case. About 90% of the time (if we bother to keep paying attention), we find that the actual facts don't match the original narrative.
While that is true, that doesnt mean an individual who is ill informed sees it that way.
This happened about two weeks ago. I will offer no personal opinions here in the OP, just sharing information. Police have declined to release any information as it is an ongoing investigation.

This incident goes quite a bit beyond "kids can be cruel."
