Quick trivia question. Name a city in Hawaii.

There is just one.

It is geographically the largest city in the world. By far!

If you named Honolulu you are only partly correct.

Honolulu is actually both a City and County.

It is the one and only "city" in Hawaii. It also happens to be the largest city in the world in size by a landslide. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,128 square miles. (Los Angeles covers an area of about 469 square miles.)

When the US was young and horses were employed having town and city governments was understandable. However, why bother with all layers of bureaucracy now?

Most smaller States would also run just fine with no separate County or City governments.

There are several cities that have done this.

Indianapolis and Jacksonville come to mind. They are consolidated cities and counties.

There is a very good reason Hawaii is just one county it had a small pop for a long time, and thus there was no need for anything else.

I know that Massachusetts dissolved it's county governments, so for example, Suffolk County (where Boston is) exists in name only now

On the one hand, you generally don't need a separate city and county level of governance, and it's wasteful. On the other hand, most attempts at consolidation in practice are resource grabs by cities against suburbs with the misfortune of being in the same county lines.
