It's really very simple, same reason companies hire celebrity spokespersons to hock their wares. We like certain celebrities and consequently trust them. When we see one of them donating their time to some cause (like this hurricane telethon) it motivates us to want to become involved and do something too.

Where I am in Ft Myers we were spared as well. Marco Island and Naples got it the worst, except for the Keys. We rode it out in Bonita Springs, and it was pretty rocky, lots of damage like trees, roofs , etc.

Hurricanes bring out the best in people, and hurricanes bring out the worst in people. We all saw examples of both during the past week or so.

God spared my town as well. In the towns that God didn't spare, are these people criticizing charity figures as well?

I agree. The people criticizing the "only 45 million" in this thread are also forgetting that people giving during this telethon have probably already given to other disaster funds like the Red Cross, Salvation Army, etc. $45 million is a LOT of money.

Trump's patriotism even brought these phonies out to raise money for the population they despise. I know they are just trying to revamp their image, but this is how powerful the movement is.

As a nation, we must donate to only right wing approved charities. Hurricanes are very political.

The celebrities, as usual CHOSE to make it political to give their pathetically shallow, and fragile lives some meaning. I don't see anyone on the right trying to politicize a tragedy, but as Rahm Emmanuel said, Never Let a Crisis Go to Waste. Right?

It is for public relations. Their manager says go to the telethon to boost their public image. The public gave the money.

True enough. A lot of people donated prior to the telethon.

Here is an interesting article from CNN about how various businesses have stepped up, and this was as of September 3rd:

Businesses donate over $157 million to Harvey relief efforts - Aug. 30, 2017
