So they want to make it illegal to report ... illegals ..
Kind of ironic .

The presidential election and the administration’s policies on immigrants have created so much, at best, uncertainty, at worst, outright hostility, toward immigrants,” said Greg Spiegel, the center’s director of strategic initiatives. “Many immigrants, whether they are here legally or not, are fearing deportation and what could happen to them, and as a result are afraid to assert their rights.”

The Immigrant Tenant Protection Act aims to protect immigrant tenants from intimidation and retaliation in their homes, according to Assemblyman David Chiu, D-San Francisco, who introduced AB 291.

LEGAL immigrants don't fear deportation because they haven't broken the law.

Landlords could always get someone else to tell ICE about his tenants.

if this bill passes it will go to the federal courts.....you can't punish a citizen for reporting possible federal laws violations to the proper authority.

Sure, but that's not really the point of the bill.

It's about scummy landlords using immigration status to intimidate people into moving out or to prevent them from reporting housing violations.

It's basically taking away that slumlords use to help themselves be slumlords.

Fake news.

The bill stops landlords from harassment and intimidation.

As long as it's not retaliation, harassment, or intimidation, landlords can call ICE

Of course, some will argue that illegal immigrants shouldn't be renting to begin with and, so, shouldn't be in a position to be intimidated or harassed by landlords.

That violates Federal Law. So it'll either get struck down by SCOTUS, or it will place landlords in compliance with state law but in violation of Federal Law.

Since the landlord receives an economic benefit, the prison term for harboring, etc., is 10 years PER each illegal alien.

Encouraging/Inducing -- Subsection 1324(a)(1)(A)(iv) makes it an offense for any person who -- encourages or induces an alien to come to, enter, or reside in the United States, knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that such coming to, entry, or residence is or will be in violation of law.

Conspiracy/Aiding or Abetting -- Subsection 1324(a)(1)(A)(v) expressly makes it an offense to engage in a conspiracy to commit or aid or abet the commission of the foregoing offenses.

...With regard to violations of 8 U.S.C. § 1324(a)(1)(ii)-(iv) and (v)(ii), domestic transportation, harboring, encouraging/inducing, or aiding/abetting, the basic statutory maximum term of imprisonment is 5 years, unless the offense was committed for commercial advantage or private financial gain, in which case the maximum term of imprisonment is 10 years.

The slumlords who are exploiting illegal aliens are committing a Federal crime. Report them. The illegal aliens get deported and the slumlords go to prison. Both problems solved.
