A statue of Confederate General Robert E Lee has been removed from a Dallas city park under police guard.
The decision to take down the six-tonne statue, which has stood in Lee Park since 1936, was made in the wake of recent violence in Charlottesville.
Dallas City Council had voted 13-1 to remove the monument on the grounds it was a symbol of injustice.
Earlier this month a court threw out a lawsuit from the Sons of Confederate Veterans to keep the statue in place.
The group had failed to prove the removal was a violation of free speech, the court said.
Sounds right. All those monuments came into being between 1895 and 1925, not after the Civil War and not to commemorate the civil war heros.
They were put in place in response to Jim Crow laws and SCOTUS rulings that were passed claiming that blacks were separate from whites.
They were usually put in the center of town to remind the blacks that we whites run this place and don't you ever forget it.
It's time for them to go. Whites don't run the place any more. Get used to it.

I didn't come to Dallas until 15 years ago, but I'm happy as hell too -- and I'm a white person born and raised in north Louisiana.
Interesting if irrelevant side note: By the time the Civil War started, slavery here was just barely off the ground - only 10% of Dallas County's population was slave.

Yep. I live just outside of Dallas in Richardson. I didn't want to deal with Dallas's mediocre city services and its dysfunctional city management, but even the Dallas City Council gets some things right. This is one of those.
I don't understand how the left doesn't realize how much of a losing argument this is. You want to really pizs off people? Destroy history. Destroy any memories people have of this monument. This polls 80-20 negative just because the 20% are more vociferous than the 80% you don't give in to them.
