"As I have repeatedly stressed, health care reform legislation ought to be the product of regular order in the Senate. Committees of jurisdiction should mark up legislation with input from all committee members, and send their bill to the floor for debate and amendment. That is the only way we might achieve bipartisan consensus on lasting reform, without which a policy that affects one-fifth of our economy and every single American family will be subject to reversal with every change of administration and congressional majority.
"I would consider supporting legislation similar to that offered by my friends Senators Graham and Cassidy were it the product of extensive hearings, debate and amendment. But that has not been the case. Instead, the specter of September 30th budget reconciliation deadline has hung over this entire process.
"We should not be content to pass health care legislation on a party-line basis, as Democrats did when they rammed Obamacare through Congress in 2009. If we do so, our success could be as short-lived as theirs when the political winds shift, as they regularly do. The issue is too important, and too many lives are at risk, for us to leave the American people guessing from one election to the next whether and how they will acquire health insurance. A bill of this impact requires a bipartisan approach.
"Senators Alexander and Murray have been negotiating in good faith to fix some of the problems with Obamacare. But I fear that the prospect of one last attempt at a strictly Republican bill has left the impression that their efforts cannot succeed. I hope they will resume their work should this last attempt at a partisan solution fail.
The "fix" that Senators Murray & Alexander were working on is not a "fix" at all - Patty Murray calls it a "Stabilization Plan" -- translation for "Stabilization" is the Federal Taxpayers are required to Bail Out Insurance companies so they don't drop coverage ..... forever AND ever - AMEN.
The Insurance Company Bailout is called Cost Sharing Reductions and the Federal Courts have ruled they are Un-Constitutional because Congress NEVER funded them. Until Congress funds them - they are illegal. That illegality never concerned TeamObama, but it sure concerns those who voted for Donald Trump - we are FED-UP with this illegal activity. Congress is too scared to vote and the Democrats are only interested in the Insurance Company Bailouts.
That plan ended and talks are no longer going on as of early this week. WHY?
They couldn't get Democrats OR Republicans to sign on to it. The Murray/Alexander talks have been going on since July 2017, with hearings and they have gotten NOWHERE.
What in the world do these idiot CongressCritters think will happen when they fail to do anything at all?
Insurance companies make their final decisions at the end of September.
McCain is a bitter idiot when he says the Murray/Alexander plan is the way to go. We all saw what the Left did to Nancy Pelosi because she worked a deal with the Republicans & Donald Trump - Schumer has already stated publicly many times that NO DEMOCRATS will work with Republicans unless the Majority Party and the Republican President give the Leftists everything they want. The Democrats will NEVER come to the "table" for a bi-partisan anything and they have basically said exactly that.
John McCain needs to be removed from all Senate Committees - he is clearly too Senile and uninformed to even be on a Committee. He has moved into the Left's Unicorn Utopia if he really believes there is a single smidgen of what used to be call "bi-partisanship" -- that ship sailed in 2009 with the words "WE WON" and now you sit down and be quiet. "Elections have consequences"
no dusty, I am saying John McCain has put his personal hatred ahead of the American People. He has decoded that hate is more important. period. whatever carp McCain tosses out about reason is just bull. there is nothing at all he will vote for that would give Trump a win because of his personal hatred. period.
he hates America because he puts his hatred ahead of us.
It's your guy dotard who hates America since he will sign any bill just to get a W. He has no problem throwing 27 million Americans under the bus with no health insurance coverage.
LOL! You appropriate the insult hurled by a Communist dictator who wants to destroy the US in a sentence claiming that TRUMP hates America!?
My guess is he has gotten PLENTY of feedback due to his cancer treatment....from other patients, from healthcare workers, doctors, nurses, administrators. THEY all see this as a horrendous bill...even worse than the previous GOP attempts.
Truth is, it is better, easier, smarter, cheaper to FIX Obamacare. But the GOP can't admit that.
So...we spin in circles thanks to all the idiot GOP in Congress.
Thank God! I go under ACA coverage next year, I'm on cobra now. I have breast cancer and a disabling brain injury. I will be able to continue treatment for my cancer and brain injury.
I was quite worried. I had no idea if we would be able to afford coverage next year. Well, fortunately we could afford it if the monthly premium was 3k or less, but at quite a sacrifice. My husband is retired, we are on a fixed income. We didn't have a clue how much it would be.
My husband spent 40 odd years working in the insurance industry. He was in touch with several health benefits specialists. No one could say what the impact would be those with pre-existing conditions, not even Graham or Cassidy.
And for those judgmental posters who think I'm accepting a handout or that I'm on welfare, think again. I was an accountant. In the blink of an eye I slipped on tile, fell and could no longer perform my job...or any job that would provide insurance.
Your entire life can change in a second....literally.
The Republic is lost when we have people getting called RINO's for saying they won't support a bill that hasn't gone through a debate.
According to the Wall Street Journal this morning - they used up all their Debate Time during July on these ACA repeal/replace issues. They debated it for 20 hours and then they kicked the can again and again .... and are now facing the September 30 deadline.
That deadline wouldn't matter except that the Democrats refuse to put forward a bill that they would support or even put forth Amendments that would support. They refuse to participate at all.
Why is that??? They don't want to go on the record for the ONLY thing they will support. Bilions and Billions in never ending Insurance Company Bailouts that would make the Financial Market Bailouts look like Chump Change
