You have been misinformed. There most certainly still is an individual mandate.

Rumor has it that as long as you leave the health insurance spaces blank on your tax return, even if you don't have insurance you will still get your refund and all's well.

Now these "silent returns" have always been processed this way. This was the first tax season that the IRS was set to sort out and automatically reject the incomplete ones.

Then Trump's signed his EO ordering the IRS to continue doing exactly what they were doing all along under the Obama administration.

This does not change the law, only delays the sorting process. According to the IRS, the ACA's legislative provisions "are still in force until changed by Congress."

Congress seems to be having a time of it but nonetheless, "taxpayers remain required to follow the law and pay what they may owe in penalties" for failing to have coverage.

"When the IRS has questions about a tax return, taxpayers may receive follow-up questions and correspondence at a future date, after the filing process is completed," the agency said.

"This is similar to how we handled this in previous years, and this reflects the normal IRS post-filing compliance procedures that we follow."

Though Trump did not eliminate the Individual Mandate, his EO and all the hoopla around it led many to believe he did away with it. He did not. As it is a law, only Congress can do that and they've moved on to tax cuts for the rich.

Sorry.

If you're audited, you got to pay.

Unless you file an exemption using any of a multitude of reasons, then you don't pay any fine.

Obamacare will self implode. As long as rates continue to rise, more people will drop coverage. The system can't function without younger/healthy people to pay the bills.

Obamacare may indeed implode but it is being helped along by policies at the state and federal level to make sure it does.

That's the most disgusting, vile, politics in this world. Egos are so big that rather than try to make it work until Republicans can create something better (not different -- not as expensive, cheaper, inclusive, etc.) the federal govt. will make sure they sabotage the program -- reducing information and availability to information.....states refusing to participate in some of the programs. Yup -- I call that team effort.

Not a fan of Obamacare -- but even less of a fan of Trump and other politicians using Americans as tools for their egos.

Quite so.

People will get trapped in the interim, between when current program collapses and we get the world-class health care the citizens of the USA should have, many will suffer and some will die, and loved ones will struggle to pay the costs.

Already far too many Americans are forced into bankruptcy caring for a loved one ... one is too many. These politicians are literally playing games with peoples lives, and their children's prospects, to make a political point and along the way hand huge tax breaks to the super-rich.

Who do you thinks pays for that if they don't have insurance. So what do consider unusable health insurance. It's not like they charge you for a particle issue.
Ok, so how do liberals propose to fix it? The only thing I heard is a massive bailout for the insurance companies. What other changes are liberals proposing to fix ACA?

As retirees get older one issue with "medicare for all" is the need for cost containment because free care for all is expensive as hell, and that usually falls onto the backs of older people and younger people deemed to "not be worth the cost" of a procedure or life saving treatment. It will certainly shoot taxes way up.

Can you imagine how many doctors, nurses and facilities that will be needed when ANYONE can go to a doctor FOR FREE at any time for any little thing? No copay,no charges just whatever, whenever for whomever.

Y'all think those using the E.R. as a doctors office for free care is clogging things up, you just wait...
Where is the proposal for 'free' medical care? With medicare, part A covers hospitalization with a patient paid deductible. Part B pays for 80% of physician visits, lab work etc. If you want more coverage you pay for a supplemental policy.

And those not eligible for Medicare would have to pay for the various parts. So it is single payer not free.
