Yep. Americans last I checked their status. Of course, with the growth of tyranny in the US, I'm not so sure that is a good thing.
As far as the hurricane, they need a response just the same as would be the response to any other state or territory of the US. The widespread destruction is really heartbreaking. All the people and all the history of the island really took a beating.
They selectively choose when to identify as Americans. Normally they have a foreign identity and have no allegiance to the United States.
Exactly. The Puerto Ricans I know, don't consider themselves Americans. And Puerto Rico is a territory, not a state. I vote for cutting them loose, we don't need that island anyway... or their massive debts.
I don't know what people expect. It's not on 24/7 news cycles because we don't have boots on the ground there reporting and even if we did they wouldn't be reporting during the storm. There are groups of people mobilized to swoop in to assist but they can't do much until it's over.
Beyond their obvious citizenship, do you consider Puerto Ricans legitimately American? I ask because the response to hurricanes hitting Puerto Rico is markedly different from the response when they hit the lower 48.
On the emotional side, yes they deserve all the support and encouragement that anyone suffering does.
On the financial side do they pay taxes? I don't think they do....if not, taxpayers shouldn't fund the rebuild.
I consider them Puerto Ricans living under colonial rule of the United States.
That's about the truth of it.
