My vote is that each and every one of us cancel membership in our respective tribes, in recognition that the vast majority of us have been jerked around by the nose. How about we stop parroting the mindless tribalism of both left and right, and find the courage to face our own demons, so that we can find the strength to write our own scripts.
I always like, and often agree with Andrew Sullivan. I think h'e pretty much right on with this.
In response, I wonder how many people will agree with him that it's still fixable and how many will think too late, let's split it up. Many here have posted that.
But if we have done that say, after the civil war, America would never have become the nation it is. We may not have even been able to defeat the Germans in either war, certainly not WW II.
Try not being a member of a "tribe" for awhile. You are then considered "The Other" by ALL tribes. It's not a good feeling. Ever heard the term "lone wolf" being used disparagingly??? If you have, that is the member of a tribe attempting to discount and vilify individualism.
Not being tribalistic means being individualistic. I don't think anyone in the US beyond about .05% of the population is ready for that step. The entire population is idolatrous--it's simply a matter of which idol they worship. To not worship an idol would be too much for them.
Now, there is one other possibility as to the motivation of your post: you may be proposing a collective (like the Borg on STNG). If that is the case, I won't even discuss it. The evils of such a society should be self-evident and if they are not you have already been assimilated.
OP, you should rename the topic into something like - Sullivan:"Can Our Democracy Survive Tribalism?"
When I opened the topic I thought it would be about spatial planning and architecture (suburbia, spread, streets without storefronts, you need car to everywhere and like that.) Now, democracy and tribalism is an even more interesting subject and more people might join, but they can't see it from the title.
EDIT: Now I see that's the title of the article, so not your fault. Still "Can Our Democracy Survive Tribalism" is better.
