This seems really stupid to me given that they are shouting down or approving things against other....."Americans". I can see the chant having a place in an international soccer game between the USA and say.....Russia, but it seems nonsensical to make that chant in domestic political affairs between fellow Americans.
It is because they want to see a 1950 USA again. One devoid of many people of color or of other nationalities. One where women were 2nd class citizens. One where people blindly followed their leaders without ever questioning anything. One where sexual diversity was never spoken about and was considered UnGodly.
No different from the Germans who chanted and cheered in the 1930's. Different country, same game.
It is a great thing for Americans everywhere to show more pride in their country.
I think people who dislike American patriotism should perhaps consider moving to another country that is more to their liking. There are 190+ to choose from.

I've wondered about this, too. When we kicked some butt on the ice in 1980, it was cool, and appropriate.
At any contest, political or otherwise, that pits one group of Americans against another, it just seems weirdly presumptuous.

actually what we want is a country that stops obsessing over long dead issues like the civil war, recognize the progress we have made in the long (and very valuable) march to equality and come to a place where we recognize the greatness of every individual regardless of their ethnicity.
THAT is what we want. but we are told we are just a pack of racists that hate everyone and everything not like we were 70 years ago... you kick a dog then complain when it bites you.
