I know the government says inflation is only 2%, but no one in their right mind believes that number. I'm a Millennial and feel like bills are exploding. I had a 1-hr visit to the ER, didn't even have surgery (just an IV, a lab and an EKG test) and the cost was over $4,000. The amount of crazy bills I get is laughable. Even buying a ticket to a rock concert will come with a $50 "service fee" attached to it.

I feel that way, our current economic system feels like your a rat being backed into a cage, and just one thing going wrong will ruin you

It's always felt like some sort of rat race to me (millenial too). More to advance in career than just to cover costs though. I can't blame anyone but myself because I keep choosing to live in high churn cities like SF, NYC, etc.
Are you on an employer plan? That cost sounds outrageous (but I'm no expert)!
You just described life in general... not just for humans, all life is a race to escape approaching death, and every living thing eventually loses that race. Accumulating wealth is just one of the forms it takes for humans. Make peace with it, the feeling only accelerates the older you get.
One can easily image a squirrel asking "Has life always felt like a race to gather enough nuts to be able to survive the winter?".

Live within your means, don't buy that ticket with the $50 extra charge....surprises are going to happen, be ready for that ER visit...you have to pay yourself at each payday....don't buy that $40k car with insurance that cost almost as much as the car payment....
Not all directed at you OP...but you see this often, you have to live within your means....

Don't eat all your nuts, save some of them. You will need those nuts when winter comes.

And that's why you have to save!
My husband was in horrific car accident and his bills have topped just over a million recently! Thank goodness we have insurance, but our share is still almost $25k! Doesn't sound like much when you look at one million, but when you have two young kids, a mortgage and you're off a few months due to the accident and STD pays you 60% of your pay, you can see how an extra $25K in medical bills can be a problem real quick! You have to be prepared for the future as much as possible because things can happen unexpectedly!

Wow, that sounds really horrific. Good thing he was ok at the end of the day!
