There are many examples of Politicians who switched party and the party the politician switches to is usually very happy.

Isn't it betrayal of the people who voted for them. Shouldn't the politician step down or have to wait till the next election.

The other thing that's on my mind is when politicians for years keep saying they will do everything to stand up for what they believe and for example vote for repeal of Obamacare and when their vote counts they always vote against it.

Shouldn't we be able to have that politician removed from office for lying to their voters.

Not so much if it is a one time vote but these politicians are voted in because of what they promised and if they have the chance to prove their voters to vote for them, if they do t do as promised that is to me betrayal too.

Not sensible people who vote for the man/woman and not the party,

And if we removed politicians from office for lying to voters, government halls would be near empty.

Why should they step down? In America we vote for individuals not parties per se.

While a Tory, Labour, or Lib Dem MP who switches parties has directly betrayed the British voters who voted for their party, a US Congressman or Congresswoman who goes from being a Dem to being a Repub, or goes from a Repub to being a Dem, or either to being an independent or Libertarian, has not betrayed voters.

(Now, perhaps one could make a case for someone who changes their gender as well as their party, but that's a different issue...)

I dont see the point, since they do what they want once elected and there really isnt that much difference between the two teams anyway. See wars, debt, welfare, taxes and laws for proof.

Yes they should step down because at most they were elected because of the party. Many people vote straight party ticket.

Think about what would happen if someone was elected President and after they were sworn in, they decided to switch parties?

I personally think they should step down for the remainder of there term.
I also think that a party should be able to accept or reject people, Or even throw them out. Look at the last election, Bernie Sanders was an Independent but at the last minute decided he would run as a Dem, and there wasn't a thing the D's could do about (Well accept rig it against him.)
The same could be said of Trump, he used to be a registered Democrat.

I would love to see some Rino's kicked to the curb, This could also help break the 2 party stranglehold on our country.

Jimmy Carter thought about it, although he never made an effort to actually do it.

That situation may wind up presenting itself again.

President is the least likely office in which one should be expected to step down if he changes party.

If people are voting for a president based on the party instead of the person, they're just idiots.
