An armed gang breaks into your suburban home. You call the police. How long do you think it will take them to get there? And how do you avoid a hostage situation when they show up well after the armed criminals are already on site?
Here's what nearly everyone is missing about the police: They investigate crimes that have already been committed and enforce the law. They DO NOT prevent crimes from happening, NOR is that their responsibility.
You better be prepared to defend yourself and your loved ones against armed intruders/attackers, or kiss your asses goodbye.
Do what I did and buy a shotgun, and fill it with magnum BBs. If the Vegas clown had been shooting a shotgun, or a revolver, or a bolt-action rifle, he wouldn't have been able to fire a thousand rounds. He still might have shot up a crowd, but I doubt seriously he would have shot nearly 600 people.
BTW - anyone who needs a 30-round magazine to hit something is merely one of the "spray-and-pray" crowd.

Shotguns and single shot rifles have hunting and personal home defense uses. An AR-15 semi-auto with a 40 round box mag is meant solely for killing as many people as possible as easily as possible. The fact that Assault rifles and handguns are legal in this country defies logic and rationality.
Ya but it's a crap shoot for the perp because that cop car out front,,,,,,is the cop in right now or not?
But that kind of makes a lot of pro gunner's stance. All of this gun grabber talk doesn't do much to stop a determined mass shooter.
