Well, since anyone who was born here is an indigenous/native then why not call it American day? There are no special indigenous/natives to this country as all of our ancestors migrated here from somewhere else.
I have no problem with an Indigenous Peoples day as a holiday. I think that's important since they are a very large part of the history of this country. The issue I have is making it happen by taking away Columbus day. If Columbus doesn't deserve a holiday then just get rid of it. To give Native Americans their own holiday by taking away another seems disingenuous.
They should just leave things alone. Aren't there more important things than changing the names of holidays? Or taking away the mascots of high school football teams? I'm not Italian, but he did get money from the Queen of Spain to look for the New World. Good enough for me. Let's use our energy to fix this messed up government or to stop mass murder--more important than the name of a holiday.
I don't understand what the huge fuss is? Is exposing the truth about Columbus going to somehow destroy our country or our countries credibility? No! that's just ridiculous, he wasn't American and he was sailing under the Spanish flag, why we celebrate him I don't know why. Might as well have a Gagarin day for the Soviet cosmonaut that first went to space and kick started the space race. And speaking about that why don't we have an Armstrong day, the first guy on the moon? Or why don't we have a Amerigo Vespucci day, you know the guy that this country is named after and the guy who was smart enough to realize that the islands that Columbus stumbled upon was not Asia but an entirely new continent, and through him and his letters the rest of Europe found out about the new world.
And I think it would be nice to have a indigenous America day, or whatever it ends up being called. It will put more attention to Native American cultures, which many people think of them as some kind of historical fantasy that no longer exists or something. They are still present and they face many modern issues. It is good to recognize the people that used to inhabit our country, even if they were just as war mongering as the Europeans who replaced them. We do have a Black history month, why not a Native American history month? Or an Explorers history month? We can then discuss about all explorers and not just Columbus. Why do we need to have a specific holiday to Columbus?
I live outside of Austin. Its been hijacked by California liberals. Its surrounded by red though. Thank God.
The downtown area has hordes of homeless like California. Its almost embarrassing , especially when theres people using the conference center.
