As you can see from the last election, the Democratic party is having issues connecting with it's traditional base. Their constituents believe that they've thrown up your hands and have accepted the inevitability of globalization with no protections for the American worker. Many of us also see them as having abandoned the principals of the New Deal.

President Obama attempted to raise the overtime threshold to about fifty thousand dollars a year from $23,660. A Republican judge struck down this executive order in December. There are millions in the work force who would benefit from a reasonable modernization of the Fair Labor Standards Act. This is and was a winning issue for the Democrats.

When one listens to NPR, which as far as I'm concerned the vocal arm of Democratic liberals, one hears nothing but nonsense about the gun control and the LGBT community. The LGBT community should be asserting their agenda from behind the scenes, because their views are not considered mainstream by middle America. As far as gun control is concerned, Democrats are spitting into the wind.

In conclusion; the Democrats need to once again become the party of FDR. The principals of Roosevelt's Second Bill of Rights are a testament to the greatness of this man. Here is the link:

Dems spend WAY too much of their energy going on and on about fringe issues that most voters don't give a flip about. And we see the results of that in their massive losses across all levels of government in recent years.

And so far, they're showing no signs of waking up to that reality.

Agree.

So what are the core issues Ds should organize around and work on?

Democrats need to talk less and listen more.

Both sides are guilty of this of course, but the Left in particular has grown more and more prone to lecturing instead of talking.

Take the current gun debate....plenty of them asking if now is not an appropriate time to discuss gun control, when will it be?

Maybe when they learn to approach the issue with facts and logic instead of agenda driven, knee jerk hyperbole, half truths and downright misinformation....then we can have an honest and maybe productive discussion.

Until then, their arguments will continue to fall on deaf ears.

The Democrats have rightfully opposed the agenda of the Christian Right in the GOP to impose a theocracy on America. Where they went wrong is in the process of defending and championing the rights of those the fundamentalist Christians hate, they forgot their core base which is the working class.

Agreed.

They need to stop focusing on bathroom laws, confederate statues, and other social issues and focus on economic issues.

Economic inequality and the continuing shift of resources to the very top at the expense of hundreds of millions.

I'm about ready for the Dems to try winning again, instead of yapping about how we need more Syrian refugees, illegal aliens should be allowed to stay, and "Oh gosh! We lost again! Let's keep doing the same thing!"

Just right off the bat, I don't think there is any sort of consensus about who constitutes the Democratic Party's "Traditional Base."

Go back 10, 25, 50, 100 years and each time you're talking about a different group. From a social perspective Democrats went from being right-leaning to being left-leaning.

so I'm gonna go ahead and disagree with your premise. Also, you're only talking about 1 election cycle. Obama won twice in a row; Hillary was just a mediocre candidate with a terrible campaign.

I think you're on to something.

Support for middle income working class folks seems to be missing.

Lots of talk about immigrants and free college tuition and minimum wage, ...

Ds need to come out strong against tax cuts for the rich that will hurt the middle class.

Hopefully you understand that Dems are included in helping out those at the top.

We just had eight years of a black president who did not help out his own race at the bottom of the income ladder. If he won't help the lower class, who will?

Answer: It's not government's job to give others a hand up.
