I've lurked on this site for many years but have never been compelled to post anything until now. The strong opinions of right/wrong, winning/losing, true Americans, and harsh dismissal of any sort of discussion have me wondering if people are aware of cognitive dissonance. I identify as independent and trying to find articles that don't have a political leaning was difficult! But I found these two articles that I thought were interesting. As a former smoker I definitely recognize this in myself but I don't find this relates to me politically.

Any thoughts?

I guess I can't post links yet but a google search should lead you to the correct articles!

Part of the point of the concept of cognitive dissonance is that you are not aware that you have it.

To recognize your own cognitive dissonance requires introspection, most people are not very introspective, if at all. Going into a politics forum further adds selection bias because generally the type of hyper-partisan people who like to trawl pol forums will be the least introspective of all. Many times introspection/being forced to recognize our own biases causes a fight/flight reaction, so often you see people lashing out or massively projecting when they get called out on their ideas that are hypocritical or illogical (fight). That or they just ignore it (flight).

As far as the question in the OP, my recognition of my own cognitive dissonance was a large part of my deconversion from Christianity in my early teens.

actually you both are right/wrong, this board is fairly evenly split between left and right, with a fair population of centrists thrown in for good measure. the problem is your perception of what people post based on your prejudice and personal point of view.

I'm an anarchist (no Rulers).

In order to "be on a wing" I'd have to believe in rulers (commonly in the form of the State).

Many folks have no interest in anything that doesn't fit their narrative. Confirmation bias runs very strong in politics.

People also lack critical thinking skills and this tends to lead folks into parroting their source. They can't think critically so they rarely look beyond what they are told.

Truth is the middle ground is a great place to get work done. However right now most Republicans are so caught up in the right wing crazy they don't see how far right off their heroes line Ronald Reagan they've moved.

Crazy times.
