IMHO IF things hit the fan in Spain: it'll come down like when Czechslovakia split apart a few years ago; "meh" was the endgame and both new countries played well together.
Or it could end up like Yugoslavia did after it split apart. I doubt very much that it will though.
The biggest hurdle to independence is the significant portion of Catalonia that does NOT want to be independent..they did not vote..so the perception of a 'landslide' is flawed..it may even be that the majority of Catalonia would vote to stay. I get that Spain could not take the chance..of a legitimate election that they would be trapped into honoring even if the result went against them.
All sides appear to be backing off and softening..I sense a compromise..maybe autonomous status?
Obviously, the Imperialists in the Spanish government were very fearful that the Catalonian vote would favor secession, so that's why they so adamantly tried to block it.
It's very much like our republican-controlled Supreme Court, in stopping the Florida recount in the 2000 Presidential Election. They knew that the trend to that point, indicated that Gore would win. Anytime that a government blocks such a process, it's because they know that the outcome of it would be unfavorable to them.
Spain's Catalonian region has been threatening independence for years. But this week Catalonia voted 90 percent in favor of leaving Spain, in a vote Madrid calls illegal. But it looks like the Catalonians are going to have their independence one way or another:
No, they're not. That's just propaganda put out by Artur Mas and the anarchists and communists of the CUP.
That referendum was illegal and FRAUDULENT.
That's like Texas saying "we're seceding". Not going to happen.
The UE already said an "independent" Catalonia is not welcome in the UE.
They have an export economy-all the manufacturing will relocate because they don't want to pay customs to sell their products in Europe. As soon as their pockets feel empty, they"ll calm down.
This isn't the first time Cataluna raises cane. They're a bunch of rabble rousing ingrates and malcontents.
